Over the last few months, fans have started to give up on the hope of ever seeing Conor McGregor get back inside the cage. The Irish legend recently hinted at the same subject in a cryptic message. Now, the experts are also getting ready to bid farewell to the most popular fighter that ever graced this sport.
During a recent episode of Good Guy / Bad Guy, Daniel Cormier finally acknowledged that there’s little to no hope left. DC has been one of the last believers who have hung on to the dream until now.
The reason why people want to see Conor back is understandable. He is the biggest draw in the history of the sport, and if Conor comes back, it’s going to benefit the UFC, the business partners, sponsors, and even local businesses. Such has been the impact of the superstar. So, desperately waiting for his return isn’t as outrageous as it might look.
However, DC is now willing to give up on that hope. He said, “Bro, sadly, I’m finally ready to say it’s over…He’s done, Chael. It’s over, my brother.” Now, we have had several theories on what might make Conor come back to the UFC. It’s undeniable that he’s not fight-ready as far as his physicality and conditioning are concerned.
However, is it possible that if the UFC gives him a six-month prep time, he will be able to turn things around? In a regular scenario, the answer would’ve been an instant yes. However, things run differently for Conor. The UFC legend runs a lot of businesses and is currently pursuing his luck in politics, so even a six-month run isn’t going to do much for him.
Chael Sonnen and Daniel Cormier on whether there’s a fight left for Conor McGregor
Sonnen argued that Conor is going to have a terrible time inside the cage if he decides to come back. He believes that there’s no fighter who can be a worthy opponent for a superstar of his stature, that Conor can beat on his return. He said, “There’s not an athlete, under contract, with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, located in Southern Nevada, that he can beat.”
Sonnen also believes that the expectation from Conor, on his return, would be that he goes for a five-round fight. However, looking at his current situation and the age factor catching up, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll last that long.
DC, on the other hand, is still hopeful. Although he’s not willing to bet on Conor’s chances against an opponent, he believes that the Irish legend can face off against a few fighters in the promotion. He said, “There’s a beating waiting. And I don’t…agree with that there’s no one on the roster he can’t beat. There’s no one on the roster that’d get to fight him, that he can beat in that situation.”
In a way, Conor’s stature is also standing in the middle of his chances of a return.
