Think big, dream big, believe big and the results will be BIG! This saying captures the essence of Luka Doncic’s NBA journey. He aspired to become like LeBron James. Luka Doncic was only a kid when James was drafted into the NBA in 2003.
Doncic’s Childhood Dream Comes True
It was destined for Luka Doncic to make it big in the NBA. Little did he realize that his childhood dream would be fulfilled in the most impressive way! 22 years after James made his NBA debut, Doncic got the opportunity to play alongside his idol, sporting the same team’s jersey.
The stars aligned in favor of Doncic and his trade from the Dallas Mavericks to Los Angeles Lakers was nothing short of a controversial blockbuster deal. It happened in the middle of the 2024-25 season when he was traded with Anthony Davis. It shocked the basketball world as for the first time in its history two reigning All-NBA team players had made a trade mid-season. “Luka’s been my favorite player in the NBA for a while now. And now, we’re teammates. So it’ll be a very seamless transition,” James said soon after Doncic’s trade.

Great things happen to those who hustle. It sure did for young Doncic! While the Slovenian was blindsided by the unexpected deal, his childhood dream was about to come true! On February 10, 2025, Doncic played for the first time alongside his idol James as the LA Lakers downed Utah Jazz. There has been no stopping the duo thereafter. When asked how it felt to play alongside James, Doncic said, “It’s like a dream come true. I always looked up to him. There’s so many thing I can learn from him, and I’m just excited.”
Luka Doncic & LeBron James: Two Sides of the Same Coin
James and Doncic are the only two players in NBA history to reach 10,000 points, 3000 rebounds, and 3000 assists before turning 25. Both players have similar styles and James has admitted that in as many words. During the premier of Steve Nash’s podcast Mind The Game, the LA Lakers legend pointed out, “Because Luka plays like me, I’ve always wanted to inspire the new generations to play. And for him there is nothing predetermined. If you have two players on top of you, it’s a matter of numbers.”
When it comes to appreciation and admiration, James and Doncic have mutual feelings. “I’ve always loved players who instill so much confidence in their teammates that they make them believe they’re better than they are. Steve Nash did that. Luka Doncic has done that for seven years. Chris Paul did the same in New Orleans. I don’t go to the NBA Finals in 2006 if I’m not able to make my teammates believe they’re greater than what they are. That kind of leadership makes people willing to run through a wall for you,” James said.
At 40, it won’t be long before King James hangs up his boots. However, this is the perfect opportunity for the LA Lakers forward to pass over the baton to his successor – Luka Doncic!
Until then, let’s watch the two greats in action together.
