Rain at Spa always raises the pressure inside a Formula 1 garage. This weekend, the familiar setup questions come with a more basic concern. Nobody yet knows exactly how the 2026 cars will behave through a fully wet competitive session.
Drivers have raced almost entirely on dry asphalt through the opening nine rounds. Montreal brought a few drops, but the track never became wet enough to force the field onto proper rain tyres. Spa now threatens to end that fortunate run, with unsettled weather possible across the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.
Speaking on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show before the Belgian weekend, George Russell admitted, “You can’t really plan for it because you don’t know what you’re dealing with.”
Russell was not dismissing preparation. He was identifying its limit. Simulator work can map procedures, braking references and setup options, but it cannot reproduce water crossing Pouhon or a sudden loss of grip at the Raidillon crest. Once the rain starts, drivers must read the track from inside the cockpit and adapt before the next corner arrives.
Spa can be soaked at one end and almost dry at the other before engineers have finished reading the radar. That uncertainty matters because these cars ask drivers to manage narrower rubber, adjustable wings and a much larger electrical contribution from the power unit. The Belgian circuit could be the first place where all those changes meet standing water, falling tyre temperatures and poor visibility at racing speed.
Only A Few Drivers Have Useful Wet Data
The grid is not completely blind, but the experience is scattered. Lewis Hamilton, Pierre Gasly, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad have completed wet laps during preseason running or dedicated Pirelli tyre programmes. None of that mileage came during an official competitive session.
Those opportunities were controlled development exercises rather than tests open to the entire field. They may help the drivers recognise basic tyre behaviour, but they could not reproduce qualifying traffic, full fuel loads or 20 cars throwing spray into the same braking zone.
Cars have also changed since their early tests. Engineers have continued refining how the new power units harvest and release electrical energy, while teams have adjusted mechanical and aerodynamic setups through nine race weekends.
Spa presents a much harsher examination than any private test. The lap stretches beyond seven kilometres, and rain can hit the middle sector while the start and finish area remains dry. Drivers may have to commit to a corner before they know whether the grip level has changed since their previous lap.
Active Aero Adds A New Layer Of Risk
The 2026 cars can adjust elements of both wings between two settings. Corner Mode provides the normal configuration for grip, while Straight Mode reduces wing angle to cut drag inside designated parts of the circuit.
Drivers can request the lower drag setting only when the system makes it available. The brake pedal itself does not directly trigger the return to Corner Mode, so the wings do not simply snap back the instant a driver begins slowing for a corner.
Wet conditions bring an important safety restriction. When the race director declares Low Grip Conditions, full activation can be disabled. In that situation, the front wing may still move inside the approved zones, but the rear wing remains in Corner Mode to avoid a larger aerodynamic change at the back of the car when traction is already limited.
The Kemmel Straight provides the clearest test. A driver may approach Les Combes with cold rubber, water across the racing line and reduced rear grip. Any movement at the front wing can change the balance the driver feels through the steering wheel, even while the rear remains in its more stable setting.
Pirelli’s slimmer tyres add another concern. The fronts are 25 millimetres narrower than the previous generation, while the rears have lost 30 millimetres. Generating and retaining temperature becomes harder when rain cools the circuit or a safety car slows the field.
The FIA has also adjusted wet weather procedures around electrical deployment and active aero. Those protections should make the cars more manageable when grip falls, but Spa will test how well the systems work when the surface changes from one sector to the next.
Eau Rouge Will Expose Any Lack Of Trust
Spa punishes hesitation because its fastest corners demand commitment before the driver can see the complete exit. Through Eau Rouge and up Raidillon, the car compresses at the bottom of the hill before becoming light near the crest. A sudden rear axle snap at close to 200 mph can send a driver across the circuit before there is enough time or space to recover. A heavy impact could also destroy an upgraded floor or another valuable component before qualifying begins.
Traffic multiplies that danger. The first driver may see the wet line clearly, but the fifth car can arrive inside a grey wall of spray and blinking rain lights. At that speed, the task extends beyond judging grip. Drivers must locate rivals they can barely see while approaching one of the fastest sections on the calendar.
The 2025 Belgian Grand Prix made that problem impossible to ignore. Heavy rain delayed proceedings by almost 80 minutes, with poor visibility behind the safety car preventing an immediate start. Racing began only after the standing water had reduced and the track had started improving.
Narrower tyres and flatter floors were primarily introduced to reduce weight, drag and turbulent air, not as a direct cure for spray. The FIA’s wet safety measures have instead concentrated on managing electrical power, tyre preparation and the systems available under low-grip conditions. Spa will reveal whether those changes improve control, but visibility could still decide whether the field is allowed to race in heavy rain.
Wet Data Could Reshuffle The Grid
Engineers will study far more than lap time if the rain arrives. They will compare wheel speed traces, throttle demand, rear axle torque and tyre temperatures. Brake pressure, ride height and wing positions will also receive close attention.
Those figures can reveal whether a car loses balance when the front wing changes position, whether the rear tyres cool too quickly or whether electrical power arrives too aggressively out of La Source. Teams will also monitor how higher ride heights affect the airflow beneath the flatter 2026 floors.
A wet session can narrow the value of pure dry weather pace. Alpine enters Spa fifth in the teams’ standings, while McLaren sits third and operates under greater pressure to fight near the front. A stable Alpine setup could create an opening if a faster McLaren proves difficult to trust on wet tarmac. That does not mean either constructor already owns the better rain car. It means predictability can briefly matter more than headline speed when grip disappears.
Setup choices will shape that contest. Less wing helps a car on Spa’s long straights in the dry, but it removes aerodynamic support when the circuit becomes cold and slick. McLaren may be willing to protect straight-line speed because it expects to race the leaders. Alpine could find more value in a conservative balance that gives its drivers confidence through the middle sector.
Spa Weather Can Erase Every Practice Plan
The standard weekend gives the field three practice sessions before qualifying, yet rain can quickly erase that advantage. Wet practice followed by dry qualifying may leave teams short of useful setup information. A dry opening followed by sudden storms could force drivers to learn the intermediate or wet tyre during the session that decides the grid.
Nobody in the paddock will trust the local radar for long. Spa can soak one side of the circuit while sunlight reaches the other, and if the skies open over the Ardennes, drivers must keep these active aero cars pointing straight when grip disappears at the top of Raidillon. That will provide the first serious measure of whether Formula 1’s new generation is truly ready for the wet.
