Silverstone gave Audi 2 very different reasons to believe. Gabriel Bortoleto turned 11th on the grid into 8th place, delivering the best result of the team’s debut Formula 1 season. Yet qualifying showed why the R26 remains trapped near the rear of a crowded midfield.
Nico Hulkenberg reached 300.1 km/h in the speed trap. Bortoleto managed 298.5 km/h. Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari topped the table at 317.9 km/h.
Wing level, tow and energy deployment influence those figures, so they are not a pure engine test. Still, they matched Audi’s wider pattern. The car finds time in corners and gives much of it back on the straights.
Bortoleto has scored all 6 of Audi’s points through 9 rounds, while Hulkenberg has 0 and has retired from 4 races. Hinwil has produced a chassis that belongs in the midfield fight. Neuburg must build a power unit capable of keeping it there.
Silverstone Put the Deficit on Display
Bortoleto missed Q3 at Silverstone by only 0.032 seconds. Hulkenberg also reached Q2, continuing a season in which Audi has put at least 1 car into the second phase of qualifying at every Grand Prix and reached Q3 on 3 occasions.
The detail inside the lap was more revealing than the final positions. Official timing placed Hulkenberg 8th fastest and Bortoleto 10th in sector 2. At the speed trap, they ranked 16th and 18th.
Hamilton was 17.8 km/h faster than Hulkenberg and 19.4 km/h faster than Bortoleto at the measuring point.
Those numbers need context. Hamilton may have gained from a tow, and every team chose its own balance between drag and cornering load. Audi’s concern, however, does not rest on 1 Silverstone table.
Both McLarens and both Red Bulls reached Q3. Audi placed both cars inside the top 10 during the middle sector, but neither advanced beyond Q2.
That contrast provides a useful aerodynamic benchmark. McLaren and Red Bull can generate the load needed through Silverstone’s fast direction changes without surrendering the same amount of performance once the track opens onto a straight. Audi can approach their cornering window during isolated parts of a lap, but it cannot yet reproduce the same balance across the entire circuit.
After qualifying in Austria, Bortoleto argued that the chassis could have fought near the top 3 with straight-line performance comparable to Mercedes or Red Bull. He had qualified 12th there, only 0.1 seconds short of Q3, after Audi introduced a successful aerodynamic update.
The Brazilian is not claiming the R26 is complete. His point is narrower and more important. Audi is already building usable cornering performance. The engine is preventing that pace from appearing where it matters most, on the timing screen.
That is why the Silverstone numbers carry weight beyond 1 race weekend. They offer a visible measure of Audi’s progress and expose the distance the power unit programme must cover before Binotto’s long-term targets can be taken seriously.
Binotto’s 2030 Plan Has a 2028 Checkpoint
For Audi, the road from Silverstone’s speed trap to a championship challenge runs through 2028. That is when short-term gains in qualifying pace, reliability and engine performance must begin turning into sustained competitiveness.
In comments published on July 12, 1 week after the British Grand Prix, Binotto described 2026 and 2027 as construction years. He identified 2028 as the moment when Audi expects a further leap in quality.
Binotto did not define that leap as regular podiums, a top 4 constructors’ finish or a first victory. The 2028 marker is currently an organisational and technical checkpoint, not a public results guarantee.
He instead placed every stage of the rebuild inside a much larger ambition.
“Our target is 2030: we want to build a team capable of competing for the world championship,” Mattia Binotto said, setting a deadline that gives Audi only 4 seasons to move from the lower midfield to the front.

That timetable puts immediate pressure on the engine programme. Audi cannot follow the normal learning curve of a new manufacturer if it expects to fight established winners before the end of the decade.
Ferrari and Mercedes have decades of accumulated Formula 1 knowledge. Red Bull Ford began the new rules with major investment and an established race-winning organisation around it. Audi started its own power unit programme from scratch.
Binotto expects Audi to produce a leading power unit within a couple of seasons. His championship timetable cannot afford for 2 seasons to become 3 or 4.
Three Factories Must Operate Like One Team
Audi’s Formula 1 entry rests on 3 connected bases. Hinwil develops the chassis through the former Sauber operation. Neuburg builds the power unit in Germany. Bicester gives the project a recruitment and engineering presence in the United Kingdom.
That structure gives Audi control over the complete car. It also forces the manufacturer to develop a chassis, an engine and the working relationship between both programmes at the same time.
Binotto said about 1,400 people work across the project, although only just over 100 are visible at the circuit on a race weekend.
Allan McNish is now settled into the Racing Director role after Audi announced his appointment on April 24. He took charge of trackside operations from the Miami Grand Prix, overseeing sporting work, strategy and driver management.
The change allows Binotto to spend more time on the wider organisation and the links between its factories. Those connections are not simply an administrative concern. They determine how quickly information moves from the driver, through the race engineers and back to the technical departments.
When Hulkenberg reports a gearbox issue or a problem with power delivery, the trackside group must identify the fault accurately. Hinwil then needs to understand how the failure relates to the chassis installation, while Neuburg examines whether the source sits within the power unit or its supporting systems.
A delay or misunderstanding anywhere in that chain can cost another race weekend. Audi’s ability to make 3 bases operate as 1 team will therefore shape both its reliability and the speed of its development.
Hulkenberg’s Retirements Expose More Than Bad Luck
Bortoleto’s 8th place at Silverstone rewarded a run of races in which Audi had repeatedly finished just outside the points. Before Britain, the Brazilian had taken 11th place at 3 consecutive Grands Prix.
The pace was close. The result kept escaping.
Hulkenberg has lived through the harder side of the same project. Silverstone became his 4th retirement in 9 races after a gearbox problem ended his weekend.
He had shown useful speed in qualifying, but another technical failure removed any chance of turning it into points. For a veteran hired to guide a new works team, the frustration goes beyond watching his rookie teammate collect every point.
Each retirement also removes valuable race data. Audi loses long-run information, tyre behaviour, energy deployment figures and driver feedback that could help Hinwil and Neuburg understand how the complete car performs under pressure.
That makes Hulkenberg’s reliability record part of the wider integration challenge. A factory team cannot separate chassis development, power unit performance and trackside execution when failures continue to cross the boundaries between them.
His experience remains crucial because he can help engineers identify whether a problem begins with the car, the engine, the gearbox or the way those systems communicate. Audi must then prove that information can travel between the circuit, Hinwil, Neuburg and Bicester without becoming slowed or diluted.
Audi’s Engine Department Holds the Timeline
The Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities assessment has already given Audi 2 engine upgrade tokens. Available performance data suggested its internal combustion engine was more than 4 per cent behind the Red Bull Ford benchmark.
Audi used an updated unit in Barcelona, but the Austrian and British weekends showed that the deficit has not disappeared.
No team wins a championship through speed trap figures alone. Audi must also improve reliability, race execution, energy deployment and aerodynamic development.
The power unit, however, has the least room for delay because the chassis has already raised expectations.
Binotto can reasonably ask for patience in 2026. Audi is new as a full works team, even if its Hinwil base carries decades of Sauber experience.
By 2028, patience must produce a visible return. Regular points need to come first. Q3 appearances must then become podium opportunities rather than isolated signs of promise.
Audi does not need to win now to make the 2030 target believable. It does need to prove that its factories can solve problems as 1 operation and stop asking its drivers to recover every kilometre lost on the straights.
