Fernando Alonso is approaching his 45th birthday while driving the slowest car on the Formula 1 grid.
Aston Martin has collected only 1 point from the opening 10 rounds and sits 10th among 11 constructors. Neither Alonso nor Lance Stroll has escaped Q1 this season. At Spa, Alonso qualified 21st, finished 2 laps behind the winner and spent another race unable to fight anyone beyond his teammate.
Hungary brings Aston Martin’s response. The team has produced a lighter chassis, a new nose, revised rear suspension and sweeping aerodynamic changes. Engineers are not searching for a few tenths. They are trying to drag a fundamentally broken car back into competition.
Budapest is also the final race before the August break, when Alonso plans to consider his future. Aston Martin has 1 weekend to prove that its expensive project still deserves his trust.
Spa Exposed A Car With No Place To Hide
Spa did not merely reveal weaknesses in the AMR26. It showed how far Aston Martin has fallen behind.
Alonso ended qualifying 4.137 seconds away from pole position. More damagingly, he was 2.031 seconds slower than Sergio Perez in the nearest Cadillac, a team operating near the lower end of the field during its debut season.
The comparison was brutal. Cadillac is still building its Formula 1 operation, yet Aston Martin could not get close despite years of investment, a new factory, a works Honda partnership and Adrian Newey‘s arrival.
Sunday offered no excuse. Alonso finished more than 70 seconds behind Valtteri Bottas in the other Cadillac and was classified 2 laps down. There was no major strategy failure, clear driving mistake or freak mechanical issue to soften the result.
The car was simply too slow.
Its problems stretch across almost every phase of a lap. Stroll has identified severe understeer, unstable corner entry, weak braking, poor traction and aerodynamic behaviour that can suddenly change at high speed. Drivers cannot attack when they do not know whether the rear will remain planted or the front tyres will respond.
Spa magnified every flaw. The long straights punished Honda’s limited power delivery, while the fast corners exposed a chassis unable to produce stable downforce. Alonso had to manage the car rather than push it.
For a driver known for extracting speed from difficult machinery, that is perhaps the most damaging detail. The AMR26 is not merely slow. It gives him almost nothing to work with.
Aston Martin Has Thrown A New Chassis At The Crisis
Aston Martin has responded with far more than a routine floor update.
The team removed enough weight from the chassis structure to require fresh homologation and crash testing around its forward section. Engineers also produced a new nose, revised key aerodynamic surfaces and reworked the rear suspension. The front suspension and basic gearbox architecture remain, but most of the car’s performance platform has been attacked.
Every kilogram matters because the AMR26 began the season carrying too much weight. Removing that excess should sharpen acceleration, braking and direction changes. Yet weight alone cannot rescue a car that repeatedly loses aerodynamic stability.
The new bodywork must give Alonso and Stroll a machine that reacts consistently. They need a front end that turns when asked, a rear that stays beneath them under braking and airflow that does not collapse whenever the ride height changes.
Those are basic requirements for a Formula 1 car. Aston Martin has spent 10 races without them.
Hungary is less of an upgrade weekend and more of an emergency technical reset. Newey and his engineers are not polishing a competitive package. They are trying to create the foundation the original AMR26 never had.
Internal targets have placed the possible gain from Aston Martin’s complete rebuild at around 2 seconds. That estimate covers more than the Budapest package and depends on later aerodynamic work and further Honda development.
Even such a huge improvement would not have carried Alonso comfortably ahead of Cadillac at Spa. Aston Martin is trying to recover several steps while every rival continues moving forward.
“What I want is a gain in trust on what we are doing,” Fernando Alonso said.
That trust will not come from simulations, factory numbers or promises about future potential. Alonso needs to feel the progress through the steering wheel.
Hungary Must Prove The New Car Can Be Driven
The Hungaroring gives Aston Martin a cleaner place to judge its rebuild.
Its shorter straights should reduce the damage caused by Honda’s power deficit. The slower and medium-speed corners will place more emphasis on mechanical grip, balance and predictable downforce. Engineers should receive a clearer answer about whether the chassis changes have worked.
Yet the circuit will not protect Aston Martin from failure. A nervous rear end will still punish the drivers through Budapest’s long corner sequences. Heavy understeer will destroy tyre life, while poor traction will leave the car vulnerable out of slower turns.
The team must also avoid hiding behind the size of the package. Major changes require setup work, but Aston Martin no longer has the luxury of treating every race as another test session.
Engineers need to establish the correct ride height, confirm that track data matches the wind tunnel and understand how the revised suspension controls the aerodynamic platform. Alonso and Stroll must then find the limit without losing valuable practice time to another technical problem.
Progress should be obvious. Aston Martin needs to challenge for Q2, remain connected to the midfield and give its drivers a realistic chance to race. Finishing ahead of only the other green car will not be enough.
Budapest must provide a clear verdict on the chassis. Either Aston Martin has built a stable base for recovery, or its costly reset has failed before the summer break begins.
Honda Must Solve The Energy Problem Alonso Hates
Honda plans to introduce an engine update at the Dutch Grand Prix after the summer break. Its engineers have struggled with combustion performance under the lower compression ratio required by the 2026 regulations.
That weakness places more pressure on the electrical system.
Formula 1 removed the MGU-H for 2026. The previous unit could recover energy from exhaust gases while the car accelerated. The current power unit relies on the MGU-K, which replenishes the battery mainly through braking, lifting and partial throttle running.
Spa offers few recovery opportunities between its long periods at full throttle. Honda’s weaker combustion engine also forces Aston Martin to depend more heavily on electrical power to maintain speed. The battery charge falls faster than the car can replace it.
Once stored energy reaches its minimum target, the control system must reduce MGU-K deployment to protect the battery and preserve enough charge for the rest of the lap. Electrical output then fades before the end of the straight, leaving the car dependent on its underpowered combustion engine while rivals continue accelerating.
Alonso feels the consequence immediately. Instead of attacking, he must adjust deployment settings, lift earlier or accept that the electrical boost could disappear before the braking zone.
Honda’s update therefore cannot be judged only by peak horsepower. Stronger combustion performance would reduce demand on the battery, extend electrical deployment and make the entire energy strategy less fragile.
Aston Martin cannot rewrite the regulations. It can give Alonso a power unit that makes them less painful to drive.
Alonso Needs Evidence Before The Break
Alonso has not publicly demanded instant podiums. He understands that Aston Martin entered the new regulation cycle behind its rivals and that Newey needs time to shape the project.
Time remains the problem.
Alonso turns 45 shortly after the Hungarian Grand Prix. Waiting another 2 or 3 seasons for Aston Martin to become competitive would consume the final stage of a remarkable career. Few leading seats appear available, but remaining at the back carries its own heavy cost.
The attraction of working with Newey is obvious. Alonso has spent decades competing against cars designed by him and has never raced one himself. Walking away before that partnership develops could mean abandoning his last realistic route to another victory.
Still, reputation cannot replace lap time. Newey’s presence, Lawrence Stroll‘s investment and Honda’s factory support mean little if Aston Martin cannot race Cadillac, Haas or Williams.
Hungary does not need to transform Alonso into a podium contender. It must prove that Aston Martin understands why its car failed and knows how to build its way out of trouble.
A calmer chassis would provide a platform for Newey. Stronger combustion performance would ease the electrical crisis. A genuine move toward the midfield would finally turn promises into evidence.
Anything less will leave Aston Martin asking a 2 time world champion to sacrifice more of his career for another uncertain future.
