The exact gain will therefore change from track to track. Using circuit-specific lap lengths, the estimated improvement was about 1.572 seconds in Hungary and could have been worth roughly 2.125 seconds at Spa. The precise figure matters less than the shift it represents. Aston Martin moved from being comfortably outside the midfield to competing at its edge.
Sunday Proved the Qualifying Gain Was Not a Fluke
Sunday’s 70-lap race provided a different examination. Qualifying pace can hide weaknesses that become obvious over a longer distance, particularly when tyre wear and fuel load enter the equation.
Stroll started last and recovered to 13th. Alonso moved from 16th to 14th.
The Aston Martins finished between the Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto. They also beat both Haas cars and both Williams cars.
For much of the season, Alonso and Stroll had lacked the pace to stay close enough to those teams. In Hungary, they could finally attack through strategy and fight for position on the track.
