Mercedes’ new F1 engine upgrade plan became far more threatening when Kimi Antonelli charged from 19th to win at Monza. The Italian did it without Mercedes using its only ADUO performance upgrade of 2026. For Ferrari, which has already used both allowances granted by the FIA, that creates an uncomfortable reality.
The difference in allocation was not voluntary. Under Formula 1’s catch-up system, Mercedes received one upgrade because its combustion engine was between 2 and 4 percent behind the FIA benchmark. Ferrari received two because its deficit exceeded four percent. Maranello used those opportunities in Austria and at Monza. Mercedes has saved its single development for October.
Yet the existing Mercedes package still delivered a one-two finish on Ferrari’s home ground. Antonelli won, George Russell finished second, and the Silver Arrows stretched their constructors’ advantage to 122 points. Official Formula 1 standings now show Mercedes leading Ferrari 468 to 346.
Lewis Hamilton also sits 76 points behind Antonelli in the drivers’ race. The championship math already looks severe. Another Mercedes power increase could make it brutal.
Mercedes Won Before Playing Its Final Card
Red flares burned above the Monza grandstands, but the race belonged to Mercedes. Antonelli recovered from his power-unit penalty, used a late virtual safety car perfectly, and passed Russell during the closing laps.
Ferrari endured the opposite afternoon. Charles Leclerc crashed on Lap 2 after an opening-lap clash with Hamilton. Meanwhile, Hamilton salvaged sixth but never threatened the Mercedes pair.
That outcome mattered beyond the trophies. Ferrari had chosen Monza for the debut of its second and final ADUO engine specification. The 067/7 power unit arrived with combustion-chamber revisions, a new turbocharger, and updated Shell fuel.
Motorsport.com reported before the weekend that Ferrari expected roughly 15 additional horsepower from the package. Engineers also targeted smoother torque delivery and more efficient electrical energy use. Monza, with its prolonged full-throttle sections, offered the clearest possible test.
But the timing screens told a different story.
Ferrari improved its straight-line performance, yet Mercedes still controlled the race with its existing engine. Antonelli even acknowledged that Ferrari had drawn level in some speed comparisons. Across a full lap and race stint, however, the W17 remained the more complete car.
That distinction now frames the title fight. Ferrari has narrowed one deficit. Mercedes still has room to move the target.
Why Ferrari Got Two Shots and Mercedes Got One
Formula 1 introduced Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities, known as ADUO, to prevent manufacturers from remaining trapped behind the leading combustion engine.
The rule works through performance bands. A deficit between two and four percent earns one extra homologation. A gap beyond four percent unlocks two, plus additional dyno time and cost-cap relief.
After the first review period, the FIA placed Mercedes in the first category. Ferrari, Audi, and Honda entered the second. Red Bull Ford topped the internal combustion index, although paddock observers continued to regard Mercedes as the strongest complete hybrid package.
No manufacturer gained another allowance during the second review. Ferrari therefore had two 2026 opportunities, while Mercedes had one.
Timing separates their strategies. Ferrari used both upgrades before the final ten rounds. Brixworth delayed its single development while engineers studied the new power units across several circuit types.
Motorsport.com expects the Mercedes engine upgrade to arrive in October. That schedule could point toward the United States Grand Prix. Austin’s long back, straight and heavy traction zones, would provide a brutal first test.
Ferrari’s Monza Gamble Fell Short
Ferrari never presented its second update as a miracle cure. Team principal Fred Vasseur repeatedly lowered expectations before Monza, stressing that engine development required long lead times and major financial commitments.
After the race, he offered an unvarnished assessment.
“We are missing pure power,” Vasseur told Motorsport.com. Ferrari could shift electrical deployment toward one straight, he explained, but that merely reduced the available energy elsewhere. Moving performance around the lap could disguise the weakness. It could not remove it.
The speed-trap data reinforced his point. Motorsport.com reported that the Ferrari-powered Haas of Oliver Bearman ran 5.6 km/h slower than the Mercedes benchmark during qualifying. Aerodynamic setup influences top speed, so that figure does not measure engine performance alone. Still, Monza magnified the remaining gap.
Bearman also drove the latest Ferrari specification. His feedback stripped away any suggestion of a dramatic leap.
“It’s a much smaller step than what the [aero] upgrade was,” Bearman said. Later, he added: “I don’t think it was a game changer.”
His comparison carried weight because Haas introduced a substantial chassis package alongside the engine. The VF-26 received a redesigned floor, reshaped sidepods, revised rear bodywork, and a new engine cover. Bearman estimated that the aerodynamic gain delivered more than twice the benefit of Ferrari’s power increase.
That does not make the engine development worthless. In a grid where 0.127 seconds separated third from seventh during Monza qualifying, even a few horsepower can shift several positions.
Ferrari, however, needed more than a useful step. It needed an answer to Mercedes. Monza suggested that the answer remains incomplete.
Brixworth Is Chasing More Than Horsepower
Mercedes does not need to pursue a spectacular dyno number. Its current power unit already combines strong output with efficient deployment, cooling, and drivability.
The October specification can target weaknesses revealed during the first 13 rounds. Engineers have gathered race data from four teams: Mercedes, McLaren, Alpine, and Williams. Each chassis places different demands on cooling, energy recovery, and power delivery.
That information gives Brixworth a broad technical picture. Mercedes can examine how its combustion engine behaves at altitude, how quickly the turbo responds after slow corners, and where the battery reaches its deployment limits.
Even a modest combustion gain could create several secondary benefits. Greater thermal efficiency may reduce fuel consumption. Improved turbine performance could sharpen energy recovery. Smoother torque delivery may also protect the rear tires during long traction phases.
At Austin, cleaner delivery from Turn 11 would help acceleration onto the back straight. In Mexico City, improved turbo efficiency could matter in the thin air. Interlagos would test how well the package combines deployment with sustained climbing and repeated acceleration.
The October engine update therefore carries more value than its peak horsepower figure. Mercedes can shape where and how the performance arrives.
Ferrari has fewer options. With both ADUO homologations spent, its engine department must optimize the existing hardware through permitted software changes, fuel refinement, and reliability work.
Engineers can adjust MGU-K mapping to soften the initial torque hit exiting corners such as Ascari. That may improve rear grip and reduce wheelspin. Yet extra deployment in one section removes electrical energy from another unless the car recovers more.
Vasseur described that tradeoff as the wrong spiral. Ferrari can rearrange its available power. It cannot create unlimited energy.
Maranello Must Find Speed Outside the Engine
With its engine development completed, Ferrari must squeeze more lap time from the SF-26 chassis. That shifts attention toward the floor edges, diffuser, front-wing balance, and cooling layout.
Ferrari brought track-specific aerodynamic changes to Monza. According to Racer’s technical review, the package included modifications to the floorboard, mirror stay, rear brake ducts, and tailpipe installation. Each change targeted drag reduction while preserving as much downforce as possible.
Future circuits demand a different balance. Madrid will require Ferrari to generate stable load through slower corners while keeping tire temperatures under control. Austin places greater emphasis on floor consistency through the opening esses. Mexico City rewards efficient downforce because the thin air reduces both drag and grip.
Ferrari can refine the floor-edge geometry to control airflow beneath the car. Small diffuser changes may improve rear stability during direction changes. Revised front-wing elements could give Hamilton and Leclerc a sharper initial response without unsettling the rear axle.
Cooling also offers potential gains. Smaller bodywork openings reduce drag, but they raise temperatures around the engine and electrical systems. Ferrari must find a workable compromise, especially after introducing a hotter and more demanding combustion concept.
Those changes require money and production capacity. Wolff has already questioned whether Ferrari can sustain its aggressive aerodynamic program under the cost cap. His comments contained the expected political edge, but the underlying constraint remains real.
Every new floor consumes design hours, manufacturing resources, and spare-part capacity. A failed update wastes more than a weekend.
The Points Table Leaves Ferrari No Margin
Mercedes now leads the constructors’ standings by 122 points with ten rounds remaining. Ferrari still has time to recover, but the required swing has grown steep.
The driver standings create another complication. Antonelli leads Russell by 66 points, while Hamilton trails the championship leader by 76. Leclerc’s Monza retirement pushed his own challenge further away.
Ferrari cannot rely on occasional victories. It must consistently outscore both Mercedes cars while limiting errors between Hamilton and Leclerc. Their first-lap contact at Monza made that task harder and increased pressure on Ferrari to establish clearer racing rules.
Meanwhile, Mercedes customers can also influence the contest. A quicker McLaren or Alpine can take points from Ferrari without either of the Mercedes entering the fight. Any Brixworth improvement could strengthen that wider group.
This multiplier makes the delayed upgrade especially dangerous. Ferrari is not preparing for only two faster cars. It may face a stronger Mercedes-powered field.
Reliability remains the main threat to that plan. Antonelli already exceeded part of his permitted component allocation, causing his Monza penalty. Pushing harder risks increasing cylinder pressures, temperatures, and stress throughout the system.
Raw speed means nothing if the car starts from the pit lane or breaks down on Lap 40. Mercedes must make its final development durable enough to survive the championship run.
October Could Decide the Development War
Ferrari and Mercedes approached the new regulations with sharply different rhythms. Maranello chased immediate gains because allowing Mercedes to escape early carried its own danger. Brixworth gathered data and waited before committing to its only upgrade.
Wolff summarized the strategy during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. “We need to be really just strategic about when to bring the upgrades,” he told Motorsport.com.
Ferrari gave Mercedes every reason to abandon that patience over the summer. Hamilton won in Barcelona, the SF-26 kept gaining speed, and Maranello rolled out new parts at an aggressive rate. Each improvement tightened the competitive picture and tested Brixworth’s resolve.
Mercedes held its nerve.
That restraint now looks increasingly significant. The team absorbed Ferrari’s strongest development push without rushing its final engine specification onto the car. Then it arrived at Monza and delivered a one-two finish before playing that card.
Ferrari’s strategy still produced real progress. Hamilton and Leclerc have both won races, while the SF-26 has often matched or exceeded the W17 through certain corner types. Its Monza engine also reduced the straight-line deficit.
Still, Mercedes dominated Ferrari’s home race before introducing its biggest remaining technical weapon. That fact now shapes every calculation in Maranello.
If the October specification delivers, Ferrari will face the strongest Mercedes package of the season with no engine homologations left. A small power increase could improve qualifying positions. Better deployment could strengthen race pace. Cleaner torque delivery might extend tire life and open more strategic options.
Failure would change the argument. A reliability problem or negligible performance gain would validate Ferrari’s decision to develop early. Maranello already understands its final hardware and can spend the remaining rounds refining it.
The next phase will move beyond rumors and dyno estimates. Austin, Mexico City, and Interlagos will expose power delivery, energy recovery, cooling, and durability under very different conditions.
Mercedes has one engine upgrade left. Ferrari has a 122-point deficit and no comparable response waiting in reserve.
That does not end the championship. But unless Ferrari finds significant speed around its engine, Mercedes’ patience may have already decided how this development war finishes.
