Alpine’s Dutch GP upgrades looked convincing before Pierre Gasly even reached the final timing screen. Through Zandvoort’s steep banking and fast direction changes, the A526 stayed underneath him with a confidence missing before Formula 1’s summer break. Wind swept across the exposed circuit near the North Sea while the car loaded up through one of the calendar’s most demanding laps. Gasly kept pushing.
Hours later, the stopwatch supplied harder evidence. He put Alpine eighth in Sprint Qualifying with a 1:12.578, reaching SQ3 and finishing ahead of every driver outside the established front-running group. Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto missed him by only 0.005 seconds.
The result mattered because Alpine had arrived in the Netherlands going backwards in Formula 1’s development race. Racing Bulls had taken fifth in the Teams’ Championship. Audi had become a regular threat around the points. Alpine needed its delayed aerodynamic package to work immediately.
So far, it has.
Alpine had run out of time to wait
Alpine originally earmarked these upgrades for Monza, not Zandvoort. Autosport’s Stuart Codling reported on August 21 that unexpectedly strong simulator results convinced the team to accelerate production and bring the package forward by one race.
That rush created a problem. Enstone produced only one complete set in time for the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, so Pierre Gasly received the new specification while Franco Colapinto remained on the older car.
On a Sprint weekend, that decision carried extra risk. Teams had only one practice session before Sprint Qualifying locked them into competitive running, leaving Alpine little room to chase setup mistakes or investigate an unexpected correlation problem. However, the split specification also gave engineers a useful comparison between the old A526 and the new one.
The background made that comparison especially important. Formula 1’s official July 28 report described Alpine as the midfield benchmark through much of the first half of 2026. Gasly scored in six of the opening seven Grands Prix, and his third-place finish at Monaco on June 7 delivered the team’s biggest points haul of the season.
Before long, that advantage disappeared. Racing Bulls scored with both cars in Hungary and moved five points clear of Alpine, 66 to 61, heading into the summer break.
The reason was not difficult to trace.
Racing Bulls forced Alpine to accelerate
Racing Bulls had already made the move Alpine was trying to make now.
At the Canadian Grand Prix, the Faenza team introduced a substantially revised floor. Formula 1’s official technical rundown detailed new underfloor geometry designed to increase efficient downforce across a wider range of conditions. Racing Bulls also reprofiled its rear-corner devices and adjusted the beam wing to improve airflow management and rear load.
The gains quickly reached the results sheet. Liam Lawson finished seventh in Canada, and Racing Bulls later produced four consecutive double-points finishes. An additional Spa package brought revised sidepod, roll-hoop, brake-drum and, rear-wing components, first fitted to Arvid Lindblad’s car.
Across those weeks, Alpine largely stood still. Its last major package had arrived in Miami, with mostly circuit-specific changes following afterward.
Gasly felt the difference.
Before Zandvoort, he told Formula 1 that Alpine had begun lacking pace in virtually every type of corner. That distinction matters. The A526 did not suffer from one obvious vice that engineers could attack with a setup change. It simply needed more aerodynamic performance.
Because of this loss of ground, Alpine’s upgrades became less about chasing tenths at the front and more about protecting the team’s entire 2026 campaign.
Why the new floor matters so much at Zandvoort
The FIA’s official technical presentation document shows just how extensive Alpine’s response has become.
Engineers revised the floor body, floorboard, and floor edge, while also changing the floor’s leading-edge geometry. A reprofiled diffuser works with those revisions. Alpine then reshaped the sidepod and narrow rear bodywork around the car’s Coke-bottle section, before making further changes near the rear brake drum, impact structure and rear-wing flaps.
On the FIA submission sheet, those changes read like geometry. At Zandvoort, Gasly feels them through the steering wheel.
Turn 3, the Hugenholtzbocht, uses banking of up to 18 degrees. From there, the car climbs across the Hunserug before attacking the rapid Slotemakerbocht and Scheivlak sequence. Later, the lap finishes through the heavily banked Arie Luyendykbocht, where drivers carry enormous speed onto the main straight.
Every one of those corners asks the floor to keep producing load while the car pitches, rolls, and compresses. When that airflow breaks down, the effect arrives instantly: the rear moves, the driver corrects, and the tires take another hit.
That had become part of Alpine’s problem.
Autosport reported that the team’s previous lack of downforce could also reduce electrical energy harvesting in some corners, creating another penalty later around the lap. Lose speed through one loaded section, and the damage can follow the car all the way onto the next straight.
Because of this, Alpine’s new floor does not need to deliver one spectacular peak-downforce number. It needs to make the A526 predictable while Gasly attacks.
Friday suggested it had done exactly that.
After Sprint Qualifying, Gasly said the car had “more grip” and responded better to his inputs. He also called the improvement a “big jump forward.”
Then came the part that matters in Formula 1: he used it.
Gasly’s P8 gives Alpine its first real proof
Gasly finished FP1 in eighth, 0.915 seconds ahead of Colapinto, although Formula 1’s August 21 analysis stressed that different run programs distorted that gap. Sprint Qualifying gave Alpine a cleaner look.
In SQ1, Gasly held a 0.641-second advantage over his teammate. That stretched to 0.719 seconds in SQ2, although Gasly also benefited from a more favorable later run and has generally carried an underlying advantage over Colapinto this season.
Those caveats matter. Calling the entire gap an upgrade gain would exaggerate the evidence.
However, Formula 1’s official post-Sprint Qualifying team report, compiled by Becky Hart, estimated that the new specification appeared to be worth upwards of half a second. More importantly, Gasly converted the extra grip into the exact kind of lap Alpine had been missing.
His 1:12.578 placed him eighth. Bortoleto followed with a 1:12.583 for Audi, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.
Five thousandths separated Gasly from losing the unofficial “best of the rest” position.
That margin also showed why the chassis changes matter. A more stable rear end does not produce headlines by itself. It gives Gasly the confidence to carry a fraction more speed into Scheivlak, unwind the steering a touch earlier, and keep the throttle open where a nervous car forces hesitation.
At this level, those fractions become grid positions.
A few weeks earlier, Alpine managing director Steve Nielsen had described the fight with Racing Bulls as a “development war.” At Zandvoort, Alpine finally answered with lap time.
Colapinto’s older spec reveals what Alpine still must learn
There is an awkward side to the early success.
Colapinto cannot use the same package yet, so Alpine cannot treat the gap between its two cars as laboratory-grade proof. Driver performance, tire preparation, track evolution, and run timing all influence the comparison.
Colapinto had already seen encouraging simulator numbers. Speaking to Autosport before running began, he described the update as “very powerful” in simulation and said Alpine needed the improvement to fight Racing Bulls.
Now the track has backed up some of that optimism.
However, two sessions remain a tiny sample. Zandvoort’s Sprint will force the revised A526 into conditions Sprint Qualifying cannot reproduce: dirty air, tire degradation, repeated braking and a heavier fuel load.
That is where the engineering work meets the race.
If the revised floor keeps the rear settled through long, loaded corners, Gasly can ask less of the tires while staying closer to the car ahead. Should that stability disappear once the fuel goes in, Friday’s gain becomes much harder to exploit.
Saturday will expose the difference quickly.
Gasly now has to weaponize the grip
Gasly starts the 24-lap Sprint from eighth, with Bortoleto directly behind him and the final points-paying position already under pressure.
The opening laps will tell Alpine plenty. If the A526 stays planted through Turn 3 and Scheivlak, Gasly can carry speed rather than wasting tire life correcting the car. That should also help him remain close through the final banked corner, one of the few places where a strong exit can create an overtaking chance into Turn 1.
Despite the pressure, the objective is simple: make Bortoleto defend.
Saturday also becomes Alpine’s first meaningful tire test. More usable downforce should reduce sliding through Zandvoort’s long loaded sections, where small balance problems can quickly build surface temperature. If Gasly reaches the closing laps with rear grip intact, the upgrade will have passed a test far tougher than SQ3.
Sunday demands even more. Over 72 laps of the 4.259-kilometer circuit, the revised floor must remain consistent as fuel burns away, tires age, and traffic disrupts the airflow.
Gasly does not need the A526 to become a podium car overnight. He needs enough confidence to brake a fraction later, commit to the fast corners, and punish any midfield rival who leaves something on the table.
That is what Alpine’s Dutch GP upgrades have given him so far.
Not a miracle. Not yet.
