The undisputed heavyweight championship conversation continues to heat up. Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall, two of the biggest names in the business, are all everyone has on their minds. Aspinall’s desperation to get the date confirmed has led him to several platforms over the last few months.
Aspinall is currently the interim champion in the division, but he’s far from happy being in that position. The only thing that will satisfy this hunger in him is if he earns the undisputed title by defeating Jon Jones.
But that road isn’t going to be easy. First, he’ll have to make the fight happen. And to his credit, Aspinall isn’t leaving any stones unturned on that quest. The English fighter was recently on the IMPAULSIVE podcast where he was asked by Mike Majlak, “Is Jon Jones scared to fight you?”
Without showing any hesitation, Aspinall said, “Yes, absolutely.” He went to explain how the heavyweight champion is ‘conning’ the public. Aspinall said, “I think that he didn’t want to fight Ngannou for three years, and he’s not wanting to fight me for over a year. The way he manipulates the media and the public, he’s super smart.”

That’s a huge allegation to make against someone as accomplished as Jones. However, Aspinall doesn’t have any reason to believe otherwise. He did acknowledge that if Jones is actually scared to fight him at this stage of his career, he not only understands that but he respects it. However, he can’t let him hold on to the belt forever.
Aspinall’s only mission is to become the undisputed heavyweight champion, and Jones is the only one standing in his way. If the belt was held by someone else, he’d be going after that fighter.
Tom Aspinall won’t make Michael Chandler’s mistake while waiting for Jon Jones
No one knows who to believe in this scenario. One day, a rumor spreads that Jones has agreed to the fight but wants six months to prepare. Then Dana White comes out to declare that the fight is going to happen. And recently Chael Sonne, although not the most reliable source, stated that Jones hasn’t even been offered the fight.
Amidst the uncertainties, fans don’t want Aspinall to make the same mistake Michael Chandler did while waiting for his fight against Conor McGregor. He said, “I’m chasing it up [Jones fight]. Like, the UFC is saying that it’s going to happen. I’m chasing it all the time. I want the fight really bad.”
“I see people online saying like, you know, the thing that happened with Conor and Chandler. People are like, ‘Don’t be like Michael Chandler.’” Chandler missed several opportunities to fight other opponents as he was waiting to fight Conor.
However, Aspinall clarified that he won’t go the same route. His only goal is to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. So, if Jones ends up vacating his title, then Aspinall will be comfortable fighting whoever claims the throne next.
