Medical officials can collect saliva, blood, or cells from inside the cheek to test for the SRY gene, which normally begins male sex development before birth. A negative result clears a player for the rest of her career. A positive result triggers a deeper medical review and removes her from competition while that process takes place.
The WTA will no longer wait for a complaint or an eligibility dispute. The rule applies to everyone, including players who have never faced questions about their right to compete.
That universal approach gives the tour a clear standard. It also creates a deeply personal risk. A routine test could reveal a medical condition that a player has lived with for years without knowing it existed.
The Debate Reached Tennis Before The First Test
The new policy immediately reopened one of the most difficult debates in women’s sport.
Martina Navratilova welcomed the decision publicly and described it as progress. Aryna Sabalenka has also argued that allowing transgender women to compete in the women’s category could create an unfair contest.
Billie Jean King has taken a different position. In comments reported by Reuters, she warned that excluding transgender athletes amounts to discrimination. Human rights organisations have also questioned whether universal genetic screening can protect women’s sport without violating the rights of individual athletes.
The Sport and Rights Alliance, ILGA World, Humans of Sport, and more than 100 partner organisations challenged the similar Olympic testing framework before the WTA introduced its policy. They argued that the process could expose women with differences in sex development to suspicion, unwanted medical scrutiny, and public humiliation.
Reuters reported that no transgender woman was publicly known to be competing on the professional tennis tour when the rule was announced. The WTA is therefore preparing for a possible future case rather than responding to an active eligibility dispute.
Supporters see that as responsible planning. Critics see an invasive system being imposed on every player to address a situation that has not yet emerged at the elite level.
A Simple Test Can Produce A Complicated Answer
For most players, the process will end with a cheek swab or another basic sample.
The laboratory will send the result to the WTA Medical Manager. A negative finding will normally provide permanent clearance, while a positive result will begin a separate medical assessment.
The presence of the SRY gene does not automatically produce a final ban. It can also point to a rare condition involving chromosomes, hormones, or sexual development.
One possible explanation is complete androgen insensitivity syndrome. The National Health Service describes it as a condition in which a person has XY chromosomes but the body cannot respond properly to male sex hormones. A person with complete insensitivity can develop female physical characteristics and may not discover the condition until adolescence or adulthood.
The WTA policy also covers other differences in sex development. This term includes conditions in which chromosomes, hormones, reproductive organs, or physical development do not follow typical male or female patterns.
Players with such conditions can still receive clearance. They must show that their bodies did not experience the physical effects of male development during infancy or puberty.
In the executive summary published with its eligibility policy, the WTA said, “The WTA recognizes that this is a sensitive and complex issue.”
That sensitivity will become far more than policy language when the first unexpected result reaches a player.
Consider a 19 year old competing in smaller tournaments and trying to build enough ranking points to reach the main tour. A positive screening result could remove her from the next event before she fully understands what the test has revealed.
Her absence would appear on entry lists. Questions would follow. Prize money would stop, but travel bills, coaching costs, and living expenses would continue. At the same time, she might be learning about an intimate medical condition she had never suspected.
The WTA has promised to cover the screening, any additional testing it requires, and professional counselling when requested. That support matters. It cannot remove the shock of receiving an unexpected genetic result while a career remains on hold.
Privacy May Prove Harder Than Testing
The WTA says it will keep test results, medical records, and eligibility reviews confidential. It also promises not to discuss an individual case unless the player or her representatives speak publicly first.
Professional tennis, however, leaves little room for unexplained absences.
Entry lists are public. Withdrawals are tracked. Ranking changes attract attention. A player who suddenly disappears during a medical review could face intense speculation even if no official record is released.
This is the central privacy problem. The WTA may protect a laboratory result while still failing to shield the person behind it.
A long review would make that danger worse. Each missed tournament could cost the player ranking points, prize money, and control over her own story.
Confidentiality will therefore depend on more than secure files. The tour must make decisions quickly and limit the number of people who know why a player has been removed from competition.
Olympic Alignment Explains The Timing
The policy brings professional women’s tennis closer to the eligibility system planned for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee has also adopted SRY screening for athletes seeking to enter the women’s category. Its framework provides permanent clearance after a negative result and allows limited medical exceptions for athletes with certain differences in sex development.
World Athletics and World Boxing have moved toward similar testing systems. Tennis is now part of a wider shift away from relying mainly on testosterone limits or individual complaints.
That alignment could prevent players from facing conflicting eligibility rules between the professional tour and the Olympics. It also gives the WTA a stronger defence when critics ask why the tour introduced universal screening.
Yet shared standards do not remove the human consequences.
The WTA wants a clear answer to who can compete in the women’s category. The harder question is what happens when a test produces an answer that nobody expected.
The future of this policy will depend on that first difficult case. The tour will need to move quickly, protect private information, provide proper medical support, and explain its decision without exposing the player involved.
Only then will the WTA show whether its search for competitive certainty can avoid causing lasting harm to the athletes it governs.
