South African football is mourning Jayden Adams, the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder who died at 25 on July 11, only weeks after representing his country at the 2026 World Cup.
Cape Town police found Adams at a home in Schotsche Kloof on Saturday morning. Officers opened an inquest into his death, while authorities have not released an official cause.
The national sports ministry, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC and the South African Football Players Union confirmed the news. Tributes soon arrived from teammates, clubs and football officials across the country.
Adams had just returned from the biggest tournament of his career. He played in all 3 of South Africa’s group matches as Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time.
Canada ended that run with a 1-0 victory in the round of 32 on June 28. Adams remained on the bench during the defeat. It became the final match of a World Cup journey that had placed him on the sport’s largest stage.
Stellenbosch Gave Adams His Professional Start
Adams developed inside the Stellenbosch academy before establishing himself in the club’s senior team.
He became the first player from the academy to sign a professional contract with Stellenbosch. That distinction made his rise particularly important for a club attempting to build a reliable pathway between youth football and the senior level.
Adams made his professional debut against Chippa United in August 2020. He was 19 and entered the match from the bench.
Regular minutes followed as he developed into a composed and dependable midfielder. His ability to protect possession, move the ball through pressure and cover ground gave Stellenbosch balance in the centre of the pitch.
By the time he left, Adams had made 139 senior appearances for the club.
His most important domestic success came in the 2023 Carling Knockout. During the quarterfinal against Polokwane City, Adams created the opening goal for Iqraam Rayners in a 2-0 victory.
Stellenbosch later defeated TS Galaxy on penalties in the final. The result delivered the first major cup trophy in the club’s history and rewarded a squad built around several players who had developed together.
For young players in the Stellenbosch system, Adams offered a visible example of what the academy route could produce. He had moved from youth football to the senior team, won a national trophy and earned international recognition without leaving the club that developed him.
Sundowns Move Opened the Next Stage
Mamelodi Sundowns signed Adams in January 2025, placing him inside one of Africa’s strongest and most competitive club environments. Sundowns demanded technical quality, tactical discipline and consistency from every midfielder competing for minutes.
Adams accepted that challenge and added another major title to his career as part of the squad that won the 2025/26 CAF Champions League. His international career also continued to grow after his South Africa debut against Mozambique in 2022.
The midfielder later scored 2 goals during qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Those goals helped Bafana Bafana return to the competition after a 16 year absence and secured Adams a place in the squad for the biggest tournament of his career.
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.”

Personal Loss Marked His World Cup Campaign
Adams started South Africa’s opening World Cup match against Mexico before retaining his place for the group fixture against Czechia in Atlanta on June 18. His second appearance came under painful circumstances.
His grandmother, Marianna Adams, died in a Stellenbosch hospital on June 17, only 1 day before the match. Adams remained with the national squad and took his place in the starting lineup, playing the opening 45 minutes before leaving at halftime. The game finished 1-1.
That performance became one of the most personal moments of his career. Adams entered a World Cup match while carrying a private family loss, with little time to process what had happened.
South Africa still faced a decisive final group game against South Korea on June 24. Adams came off the bench as Bafana Bafana defended a 1-0 lead and secured qualification for the round of 32.
The victory gave the country its first place in the World Cup knockout stage and completed a demanding group campaign in which Adams played a role in every match. Only 17 days separated the death of his grandmother and the confirmation of his own death.
South African Football Mourns a Career Still Rising
Tributes to Adams reflected both his achievements and the potential that remained ahead of him.
South African sports minister Gayton McKenzie described him as one of the country’s brightest young football talents. FIFA president Gianni Infantino also offered condolences to Adams’s family, friends and teammates.
Stellenbosch remembered the academy graduate who became a senior regular and helped the club secure its first major trophy. Sundowns mourned a player who had already added continental success to his record.
Adams leaves behind 139 Stellenbosch appearances, a domestic cup, a CAF Champions League title, 13 international caps and 2 goals for South Africa.
His final season brought the highest achievements of his professional life. He won Africa’s leading club competition, represented his country at the World Cup and helped Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage.
Those milestones came quickly, but they were not sudden. Adams earned them through years of development, first at Stellenbosch and later at Sundowns.
His rise had taken him from an academy system to the centre of South African football. At 25, he had reached the World Cup while still appearing to have his best years ahead of him.
