What is a Two-Way Contract NBA and How it works?
In the NBA, a two-way contract permits a player to be there for both an NBA team and its G League affiliate. G League is the NBA’s official minor league. The main idea for the two-way contract is to give the young players more playing time and experience.
This Two-Way Contract was brought in the 2017–18 season to make a route between the G League and the NBA. It allows all the teams to have flexibility and provides players with more opportunities.
A player who is on a two-way contract can spend a certain number of days. As of the 2023–24 season, it is still 50 games with an NBA team, while the rest of their time is carried out in the G League. They practice with the main NBA team and can be called up for games to develop their skills in the G League. They are not a part of the 15 full-time roster spots on the NBA team. Instead, they’re part of an extra 3-player list that every team is allowed to have.
Why Do Teams Use Two-Way Contracts and Who Signs It?
NBA teams love to use two-way contracts because they come with little financial risk. Teams can put the potential of young players into the test without committing a full roster spot or full salary. These contracts are very much especially useful for teams who are looking to find hidden gems or players who were not drafted. Two-way contracts also give teams flexibility when they are hit by injuries or when they want to start resting the regular players. They can substitute their two-way player without signing anyone new.
Players, who aren’t drafted, or second-round picks, or even players who are recovering from injuries, often get two-way deals. Some players like Alex Caruso and Duncan Robinson for LA Lakers and Miami Heat respectively, have started on two-way contracts. They later became important contributors to their NBA teams. This tells us that a two-way contract does not necessarily mean a player is stuck in the minor leagues forever. It is just a foot in the door.
Recent Changes and Limitations of Two Way Contract in NBA
From the 2023 season, the NBA allowed teams to have three two-way contract players instead of two. But there are restrictions like a player can spend only 3 years on a two-way deal with the same team. Teams have to either offer the player a full NBA contract or just let them go.
A two-way contract in the NBA is a smart way for teams to help talents and players to develop. It helps talents to get a chance at playing on the biggest stage.
