The NBA has seen its share of fiery exchanges, with 5 unforgettable moments involving some of the game’s biggest names. These episodes of player-coach rifts featured Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Latrell Sprewell, and Goga Bitadze.
#1 Kobe Bryant’s “Killer Death Stare” (2012)
Kobe Bryant’s infamous “Death Stare” at Lakers coach Mike Brown became an instant viral moment after L.A.’s loss to the Jazz in November 2012. Late in the game, cameras captured a visibly frustrated Bryant sitting on the bench, his piercing glare directed at Brown. The clip quickly spread across social media, earning the nickname “Kobe Death Stare.”
#2 LeBron James vs. Darvin Ham (2024)
LeBron James had an intense moment with head coach Darvin Ham during the Lakers’ 119-108 win in Game 4 against the Denver Nuggets in April 2024.
Leading by 15 early in the fourth quarter, James knocked the ball away from Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and it went out of bounds. Convinced the ball hadn’t touched him last, James adamantly urged Ham to challenge the call. No challenge was made, and as Denver inbounded the ball, James was visibly frustrated on the sideline.
#3 Shaquille O’Neal and Pat Riley’s Rift (2007)
By the 2007-08 season, tensions had escalated to the point of physical confrontations. In one heated practice, Shaquille O’Neal and Pat Riley exchanged shouting matches before things turned physical.
As Udonis Haslem attempted to intervene, O’Neal tossed him aside “like a sack of potato chips.” The incident marked the beginning of the end for Shaq in Miami.
#4 Latrell Sprewell’s Attack on P.J. Carlesimo (1997)
Latrell Sprewell made headlines for all the wrong reasons when news broke that he had assaulted Golden State Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo during practice. The incident escalated after Carlesimo instructed the four-time All-Star to sharpen his passing.

Frustrated, Sprewell warned his coach to back off. When Carlesimo moved closer, tensions boiled over, and chaos ensued.
#5 Greg Foster vs. Goga Bitadze (2021)
When assistant coach Greg Foster erupted at big man Goga Bitadze in the third quarter.The heated exchange followed a defensive lapse by Bitadze, who watched as Kings forward Maurice Harkless drove the lane and threw down a dunk over him.
On the next possession, Bitadze responded by draining a three-pointer but, while running back on defense, appeared to turn toward Foster and say, “Sit the f*** down.”
