Every player will be required to participate in the NBA Draft Combine. All of these changes make NBA draft eligibility more about readiness and aptitude. According to the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA):
- A player need to be at least 19 years old in the draft calendar year.
- Remove least one NBA season from high school graduation.
- Participate in a recognized development program like the NCAA, G League Ignite, Overtime Elite, or professional international leagues.
The NBA draft eligibility criteria now require to be fully involved in the NBA Combine. The players can not skip the scrimmages and athletic tests like they used to.
However, a player can only decline to participate in combine activities with a legitimate medical exemption. This helps the teams and the league both to evaluate all prospects fairly.
Timelines, Terms, and Limited Entry Choices

Rookie Deals, Overseas Contracts & Early Entry
Rookie Deals
- Once drafted, a player can only negotiate with the team that drafted him until the next NBA Draft. The team must send a Required Tender to keep exclusive rights.
- If the player did not sign a contract by that date, and if no team re-drafted him, he is a Rookie Free Agent.
Overseas Contracts
- If the drafted player joins a non-NBA team, the NBA rights of the player will remain with the drafting team for 12 months after receipt of the notice.
- For the rights to stay with the drafting team in that case, it must deliver a Required Tender in a timely manner or the player will become a free agent.
Early Entry Players
- Early entry players must stay with their drafting NBA team throughout their expected eligibility year. Teams send a Required Tender once a year to maintain those rights.
- Pursuing an overseas player or other basketball activity does not shorten this negotiating exclusivity period.
