Many NBA players are embracing personal content creation in a bid to boost both their professional and personal lives, and the trend is only increasing
We are all well aware of the power of tech and social media. The Internet today is full of photos, videos, links, or, in other words, ‘Content’. Who would have thought that this same ‘content’, thought of as both an excess and expression, would become so powerful.
No one has been able to deny its influence, not even our beloved NBA players. They have embraced personal content Creation and it is a trendy relationship which has taken the NBA world by storm.
While content creation comes with various benefits, the NBA players use it to connect with fans and build their brands. Moreover, this practice also gives them the opportunity to share behind-the-scenes stories and build a loyal fanbase. This trend is aided by the excessive use of various social media platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, X and TikTok.
While some players hire professionals to curate content which aligns with their brand name, others use social media to engage with their audience. Various NBA players have been utilizing this trend, Fred VanVleet of Houston Rockets and Bonny James being a few.
Using Photography and Videography to create Tailored-made Content
There has been a boom in the use of photography and videography to create tailored-made content. As mentioned already, many NBA players hire professional photographers and videographers to make content that resonates with their personal brand. This, in turn, helps them build a fanbase which is passionate and loyal.
The players of Houston Rockets provide an apt example. Fred VanVleet has been known to collaborate with creative professionals to record both their on-court performances and off-court lives. Other players like Tari Eason and Jalen Green are also famous for working with the photographer Wilson Anyanwu. Anyanwu is known for crafting content which reflects their unique personality and interests.

Various other players, such as Jaylen Brown, have taken content creation into their own hands. His YouTube channel is filled with snippets from the players’ on-season and off-season life. Fans are now aware of Jaylen’s interests which go beyond the court, with philosophy and social activism being a few.
Social Media, Influencers and Collaboration
Social Media has been the driving force behind the boom in content creation. It has provided opportunities which weren’t available before. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that today NBA players play the role of influencers too. They vlog their experiences, initiate live streams and engage with fans in a variety of new ways.
For example, LeBron James’ son, Bronny James, has 8.1 million followers on Instagram and around 5.3 million on TikTok. This massive following, in turn, has opened a vast variety of athlete brand partnerships for him.

However, it is not just certain players but the entire NBA League which has hopped on the bandwagon now. Reaching out to content creators for collaborations has become a part of the everyday. Quite recently, the popular streamer Kai Cenat partnered with the NBA to create content for the Knicks-Celtics season opener. In yet another case, creator Drew Afualo covered the Suns-Clippers Game for the league’s social media platforms.
It would be an understatement to say that the NBA and its players have come to form an intimate relationship with the digital world. The various opportunities for content creation and the influence of social media platforms have given a new direction to athlete-fan relationships. While this trendy relationship is experiencing a spike, it remains to be seen if it’s as effective as many believe it to be. In the meantime, however, the court is open to see, follow and stay updated on one’s favorite players and teams.
