Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest basketball players in history. He spent an excellent amount of time with his team, the LA Lakers, lifting trophies after titles. However, to this day, there is one moment that is unique and certainly iconic. Kobe had a professional photoshoot right after winning his second NBA title. This moment, as special as it may be to Bryant, was not just about basketball. It showed that things that were open were very different compared to what was actually inside Kobe’s mind.
Time of Kobe Bryant’s Iconic Photoshoot
Bryant was 22 years old when the Lakers won their second NBA championship in a row. After the game ended, he was in the shower alone, spending some time with himself. Lakers legend had an excellent season where Bryant scored 80 points in a single game and made it into the All-Star team. During that time, an iconic photograph of him was taken with Bryant sitting in the shower with the trophy.

Why Was The Photoshoot Iconic?

This photoshoot became iconic because it showed Kobe Bryant in good light but in a different manner. Most players go on to celebrate the win and the championship, and would take pictures with their teammates, but Kobe looked sad and in deep thought. The iconic photo captured him sitting by himself, holding the trophy, and looking lost. This was odd since one would expect any NBA player to celebrate the championship with joy.
Sports photographer Andrew Bernstein, who captured the shot, felt the moment resembled that of a famous picture of Michael Jordan hugging his first championship trophy.
On this day in 1991, Michael Jordan won his first title at 28.

But for Kobe, the moment was much more personal. The image displayed not only his fulfillment of winning, but also the heartache he was feeling inside.
The Story Behind Kobe’s Feelings
Off the court, not everything went Kobe’s way. While he had just married Vanessa Laine, his parents disapproved of the marriage. No one from his family attended his wedding (a private ceremony at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point, California) or the Finals of that year.
When Kobe and Vanessa got married, Kobe’s parents did not attend the wedding because she was Latina.

After the 2001 Finals, Kobe was crying in the shower with the trophy because his dad didn’t attend any games.

Due to this, Kobe might not be happy, unlike his teammates. The photo captured every emotion a human could feel all at once.
Kobe’s Success at a Young Age
What adds to this photoshoot, despite everything else, is how young Black Mamba was to be accomplishing so much. At just 18, Bryant became the youngest player to appear in an NBA game. He won two championships in 4 years. Bryant had two titles before he turned 23. This was also the birth of Bryant’s “Mamba Mentality.”
The Mamba mentality is ‘to never settle for’. Continue to give your best. Never quit. The engagement photo from 2001 that showed how champions go about handling tough moments provided an even more compelling story around Kobe Bryant.
Why is this photoshoot still relevant?
Kobe Bryant’s iconic photoshoot on the heels of winning his second NBA title is always worth remembering. It reminds fans that even the best of athletes struggle with the same problems that come with being human.
The Lakers’ star Kobe went on to win NBA championships and become a legend, but fans gained much insight into his heart and character in 2001.
