Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams successfully underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right hand, the team confirmed Tuesday. He is expected to make a full recovery. Moreover, the 23-year-old rising star aims to return by November just in time for the 2025-26 NBA regular season.
The procedure was performed in Los Angeles. Some might have speculated that he will likely miss preseason games but will be back for the regular season.
The surgery addressed a lingering wrist issue that hampered his performance during the final stretch of last season. Williams was initially injured on April 9 during the Thunder’s game against the Phoenix Suns.
Injuries started Bothering Jalen Williams Late Last Season
Jalen Williams’ wrist injury developed slowly. By the end of season 2024-25, he showed signs of discomfort on his arms. He started experiencing pain particularly during the final few weeks leading into the playoffs.

He had some minor injuries earlier in his playoff seasons. Williams has mostly not missed games. Most of his injuries have been sprains (or small strains) with short-term missed-game duration. This torn wrist ligament and subsequent surgery is both the most serious and most recent injury.
How the Thunder Plan to Fill the Gap During His Absence
The Oklahoma City Thunder must adjust their early-season rotation. Jalen Williams will remain out until November after wrist surgery. As a result, the team will lean on its depth and flexibility — two of its biggest strengths.
Still, the Thunder want to maintain the momentum from last season’s breakout run. To do that, they may use more small-ball lineups. They might also give veteran leaders more floor time, if needed.
Losing Williams hurts. He brings scoring balance and two-way impact. Even so, the team appears confident. Players know they must stay competitive in the tough Western Conference. At the same time, they must avoid overloading the stars in Williams’ absence.
Jalen Williams Injury Sparks Wave of Reactions
As soon as the news broke about Jalen Williams undergoing surgery on his shooting hand, Thunder fans flooded social media. Jalen posted a story on his Instagram where he showed his hand ligament. People and fans are showing concerns for him.

Team Thunders released a press release regarding his successful surgery.
Sam Presti, who is the general manager of the Oklahoma City Thunder, gave his statement on Jalem’s surgery.
“Jalen Williams is having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his wrist that he suffered before the playoffs. JDub really dropped 40 in the Finals on a busted wrist. Beast.”
Sam Presti, GM of Oklahoma City Thunder

Many fans felt shocked to learn he had played through pain for so long. Others quickly praised his toughness and dedication.
