The NBA draft is a process where NBA teams select players from colleges. There are two rounds in the draft; the team that wins the lottery draft pick gets the first pick. However, there can be an NBA draft refusal.
NBA teams can draft players, but they cannot force them to sign with them. NBA draft refusals are not very common, but they are likely to occur. In a draft pick some players might be ‘early draft picks’, players who enter before completing their college. Players will be drafted during the draft. An NBA draft refusal is a player not willing to sign for a team.
What happens after an NBA draft refusal?
During draft picks, the players get to negotiate with the team that has drafted them. The team gives a player time to think about whether he would sign with the team or not. If there is an NBA draft refusal, the player cannot sign for another team in that season unless the team trades their draft rights to another team.
Draft rights by a team can be traded. After a draft refusal, he can think about signing for the new team or wait for the next draft pick season.
A player might refuse a draft pick due to the contract not seeming right, different choices, and many more. However, it gives them opportunities to play overseas in other leagues or wait for the next season to be drafted again, but they must sit out (not play for professionals in that year). In a way, the player should sit out from playing until the next draft.

Initially, Kobe Bryant was picked by the Charlotte Hornets. However, he soon traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Billy Owen
Billy Owen was initially picked by the Sacramento Kings. He was reluctant to sign with them, so they traded him to the Golden State Warriors.
Danny Ferry
Danny Ferry in the year 1989 refused to play for the Los Angeles Clippers. He decided to play for a team in Rome instead.
NBA draft refusals are not very common, nor not they explicitly spoken about. However, they do occur, but a refusal to sign does not end a player’s career. They still have ways to continue to play basketball.
