The NBA is the holy grail of basketball. Other than boasting the largest audience and biggest salaries, NBA helps turn athletes into stars and superstars and makes them worldwide sensations. So, it takes a special talent to be a star before even making their NBA debut. Luka Doncic was one such star before he arrived in America.
There have been some other athletes who made their mark before they joined the NBA. The biggest name in this category would be LeBron James. LBJ was not only a household name but was also making millions through endorsements before his NBA debut.
More recently, we witnessed the buzz around Victor Wembanyama as he was gearing up for his NBA debut. In between these two eras, we had Luka Doncic. Although the buzz around his name wasn’t as loud as LBJ and Wemby, Doncic’s talent was undeniable.
The Slovenian joined the Real Madrid Baloncesto in 2015 and had a brilliant run in the EuroLeague. He was only 16 at the time. In the next three years, Doncic won the EuroLeague title, became an MVP, won two EuroLeague Rising Star titles among many other accolades. The future looked bright for the teenager and it was clear that he was destined for greatness.

Earlier this year, a fan of Doncic posted a clip of his game highlights from his teenage years. The fan wrote, “Luka when he was 14 & 15. They didn’t call him ‘Wonder Boy’ for nothing.” From high-flying dunks, driving to the basket, and long-range shots to perfect playmaking, Doncic had every trick in his bag. Several fans responded to the post in awe of the superstar and his skills as a teenager at the time.

European basketball has dominated the NBA over the last two decades. Several notable superstars and Hall of Famers have entered the league and have shown that they’re at par, if not better, than their American peers. Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic are the prime examples of European talent in the current NBA talent pool.
Responding to Doncic’s clip, a fan wrote, “This had to be the best 14 year old ever. Some of this stuff is beyond what lead playmakers on top college teams are capable of.”

Doncic plays the game with a signature flair. His movements on the court are aesthetically pleasing, as there isn’t another player like him. One fan described young Doncic’s game as “Poetry in motion.”

Doncic entered the NBA with a lot of hype. He was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks as their third overall pick and was sent to the Dallas Mavericks before he made his league debut. One of the biggest obstacles that players like Doncic face is the pressure of living up to the expectation. But Doncic was born ready for the challenge.
A fan noted, “A true “phenom”, who unlike most phenoms, is exceeding the hype. Luka is amazing.”

Last season, Doncic made a trip to the NBA Finals with the Mavericks. This season, he is playing in the first round playoff series against the Timberwolves. Although the Lakers are on the verge of elimination, there’s a long road ahead for Doncic to realize his NBA title dreams.
