Anthony Edwards is likely facing a one-game suspension after being ejected from the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 111-102 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. The star guard received his second technical foul in the third quarter, bringing his season total to 16—an automatic suspension threshold per NBA rules.
Edwards’ first technical came after a shoving match with Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt late in the first quarter. His second occurred when he vocally protested a no-call on a drive against Lakers guard Gabe Vincent.
Crew chief James Williams explained that Edwards was penalized for “directing profanity toward a game official” and that the referees considered the ejection before making the call.
The referees just ejected Anthony Edwards in the 3rd Q with LAL up 74-59. On his way to the locker room, Edwards tossed the ball into the stands, which will cost him a further penalty by the league.

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch admitted Edwards “has had too many outbursts” but believed a foul should have been called.
“It was a block,” Finch said. “Just call the block, and nothing happens.”
In addition to the suspension, Edwards may face a fine for throwing the ball into the stands as he exited the court.

He finished the game with 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists in 26 minutes. The Timberwolves, trailing 74-59 at the time of his ejection, rallied to within three points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Under NBA rules, players receive a one-game suspension for every 16 technical fouls in a season, with additional suspensions for every two beyond that. Unless the league rescinds a technical upon review, Edwards will miss Minnesota’s next game against the Utah Jazz. He told ESPN, “They should [rescind the second technical].”

Austin Reaves added 23 points, while Luka Doncic contributed 21 points and 13 rebounds. On the other side, Terrence Shannon Jr. led Minnesota with a career-best 25 points. The Timberwolves have struggled lately, dropping three of their last four games and five of their last seven.
The Timberwolves trailed 92-77 early in the fourth quarter but mounted a 13-1 run to cut the deficit. However, Doncic halted their momentum with an off-balance 3-pointer at the 3:37 mark, pushing the Lakers’ lead to 98-91.
Earlier, James’ 3-pointer gave L.A. a commanding 47-24 advantage in the second quarter. Doncic also dished out five assists, including “a cross-court pass to James early in the first quarter, who finished with a layup to put the Lakers up 9-3.”
Up next, the Timberwolves travel to Utah, while the Lakers host the Clippers.
