Forget the first restart and the first five laps on fresh Goodyears. Iowa exposes a race car after the initial grip fades and the driver begins fighting the balance through traffic.
The test arrives quickly on a 0.875-mile oval that gives drivers little time to reset between corners. Turn 2 feeds into a short backstretch, and Turn 3 appears almost immediately. One snap of oversteer forces a lift. One hard correction can overheat the rear tires.
Reddick made his name through aggression. He runs inches from the wall, rotates the car with the rear tires, and finds speed in places that look unusable. Iowa demands another layer: enough patience to protect the tires without surrendering track position.
The Iowa Corn 350 runs for 350 laps and 306.25 miles on August 9. Across that distance, crew chief Billy Scott must give Reddick a car that fires well without burning through its tires. Reddick must then resist attacking every corner like a qualifying lap.
His path to victory starts with a simple trade. Give away a little speed early, then take it back when everyone else begins sliding.
Iowa Has Been a Blind Spot for Reddick
Reddick carries championship-level speed into Iowa, but his Cup record there tells a different story.
He finished 22nd in the inaugural 2024 race and improved only to 19th in 2025, according to NASCAR Racing Insights. Neither result came during a poor stretch of his career.
Reddick won the 2024 Cup Series Regular Season Championship with three victories. His production dropped in 2025, when NASCAR’s official season review recorded zero wins, seven top-five finishes, 14 top tens, and a ninth-place championship result.
That winless season also came with personal strain. Reddick spent part of the closing stretch dealing with serious concerns surrounding the health of his newborn son. Even so, the No. 45 team reached the playoffs and finished inside the championship top ten.
He responded emphatically in 2026.
Reddick snapped a 38-race winless streak in the Daytona 500 and won five of the season’s first nine races. NASCAR reported that no driver had reached five victories that quickly since Dale Earnhardt in 1987.
Iowa remains the outlier. Reddick has never finished inside the top 18 there, making his long-run speed at Iowa a problem to solve rather than an assumed advantage.
Last Year’s Race Showed What Matters
William Byron’s 2025 victory offered the clearest blueprint.
Byron led 141 laps and beat Chase Briscoe by 1.192 seconds. Brad Keselowski led 68 laps, while Briscoe controlled 81. Twelve cautions consumed 72 laps and turned the final stage into a test of tire life, fuel mileage, traffic, and restart execution.
Byron stretched his final fuel load across 144 laps, helped by repeated cautions. The last 64 laps stayed green, forcing his tires to survive Briscoe’s closing charge.
Briscoe reached Byron before traffic disrupted the front of his Toyota and dulled the handling. Afterward, he said the car lost effectiveness once he caught the back of the field.
There is no universal lap-time penalty for dirty air at Iowa. The loss changes with distance, lane choice, tire age, and balance. Briscoe’s run still proved the larger point: speed means little if a driver cannot preserve it through traffic.
For Reddick, the strategy starts there.
The Tire Test Gives 23XI a Head Start
Reddick joined Austin Dillon and Noah Gragson for Goodyear’s two-day Iowa tire test in May, giving each manufacturer one representative.
The session allowed Scott and the No. 45 engineers to track pressure buildup, tire temperatures, balance shifts, and Reddick’s preferred lanes across longer runs.
Reddick told NASCAR.com he wanted Goodyear to keep bringing softer tires that wear faster. Heavy falloff suits him because it rewards drivers who protect the contact patch instead of chasing early lap time.
Track temperature, support-series rubber, and Goodyear’s final compound can still change the equation. Even so, the test should help Reddick recognize fading grip sooner and give Scott a clearer baseline for adjustments.
The First Ten Laps Are the Trap
Fresh tires can make Iowa feel easier than it is.
NASCAR’s official track description lists progressive banking between 12 and 14 degrees in the turns. The frontstretch carries ten degrees, while the backstretch drops to four. Those changing angles give drivers several ways to shape the corner.
They also create several ways to damage a tire.
Reddick can charge Turn 1, lean against the banking, and carry momentum through the center. That line produces a strong stopwatch immediately. It also asks the right-front tire to brake, turn, and hold the car against the lateral load.
After 20 laps, the same entry may stop working. The nose begins washing toward the wall, forcing Reddick to add steering. Once the front finally grips, the rear can step out and demand another correction.
That is the specific cycle he must avoid.
Sawing at the wheel creates scrub. Chasing a snap-loose condition heats the rear tires. Pinching the exit to defend a position forces Reddick to delay the throttle.
One mistake rarely ruins an entire run. A dozen small corrections can.
Corner Entry Must Stay Clean
Reddick’s best tool may be his brake release.
Rather than driving deeper every lap, he can establish a consistent braking point and trail the pedal into the corner. A smooth release transfers load without shocking the rear tires, allowing him to keep the steering wheel quiet.
If the car refuses to rotate, Reddick cannot keep winding in more lock and hope the front tires recover. He needs to back up the entry, release the brake earlier, and let the car settle before committing to the throttle.
That approach may cost half a car length during the opening laps, but it creates long-run speed later.
Reddick proved how powerful that patience can become at Darlington in March. After his final stop, he erased a seven-second deficit to Keselowski, took the lead on Lap 266, and won by 5.847 seconds.
Scott said the No. 45 performed especially well over a 30-lap run. Reddick also led 77 laps despite an alternator failure, a slow tire change, brake trouble, and a return to the rear of the field.
Darlington and Iowa demand different setups, yet the underlying lesson travels: protect the car, stay calm, and let the run come back.
His Dirt Background Can Help Without Taking Over
Reddick learned car control long before he reached the Cup Series.
He began racing at four and developed through mini sprints sprint cars, and dirt late models. That background taught him to feel yaw and use the rear tires to help point the car.
At Iowa, that instinct can save the right-front tire.
A slight, controlled rotation reduces how much steering angle Reddick needs through the center. The car points earlier, and he can unwind the wheel before applying full throttle.
Too much rotation creates the opposite result. If Reddick spins the rear tires across Iowa’s pavement transitions, he will lose drive and overheat the rubber. The car may feel spectacular for one corner while becoming worse for the next ten laps.
His dirt-racing instincts should guide the Toyota rather than dominate it.
The ideal lap will look almost uneventful: one clean brake application, a small rotation, and steady throttle off the corner.
Iowa’s Changing Surface Complicates the Plan
The racing line at Iowa has evolved since the Cup Series arrived.
Ahead of the 2025 race, NASCAR reported that strips of newer asphalt in the corners had begun losing some of their original grip. Ryan Blaney said the surface looked lighter after a year of weathering, while drivers in the support series found multiple usable grooves.
That development encourages passing, but it also complicates tire management.
One lane may offer more grip on a restart. Another may preserve the rear tires across 25 laps. The fastest entry point can change as rubber builds and the afternoon temperature shifts.
Reddick cannot bounce between lanes every time he loses a tenth.
Each groove requires a different approach. The upper lane carries momentum but increases distance. The bottom shortens the corner but demands stronger rotation and cleaner drive off.
A patient driver tests a lane over several laps. An impatient one changes direction before learning anything.
For Reddick, mastering Iowa Speedway long-run speed means identifying which groove protects his weakest tire. If the right-front begins fading first, he may need to arc the entry and reduce steering load. Should the rear tires fall away, a straighter exit becomes more valuable than center speed.
The quickest lane now may not remain the best lane ten laps later.
Traffic Will Expose Every Weakness
Iowa’s short lap creates constant traffic.
Leaders catch the back of the field quickly. Midpack drivers spend long stretches running nose-to-tail. Two-wide battles can trap faster cars behind a slower lane.
Reddick must avoid following another car’s rear bumper through the entire corner.
Offsetting the Toyota by half a lane can feed cleaner air toward the nose. He may sacrifice the shortest path, but the front tires gain enough grip to hold a better exit.
He cannot force every pass, either.
Diving underneath a slower car may work for one corner. Sliding across the seam on exit can cost more time than the move gained. Worse, that slide can trigger the tire falloff he spent the previous 20 laps preventing.
The smarter pass begins one corner earlier.
Reddick can alter his entry, create a stronger exit, and reach the next braking zone alongside the slower car. That method looks less dramatic, but it keeps the steering calmer and protects the rear tires.
This is where long-run speed becomes race craft.
The stopwatch may show that Reddick owns the quickest car over 30 laps. Traffic decides whether he can use it.
Billy Scott Must Resist Chasing the First Run
Scott faces his own version of the patience test.
Practice numbers can mislead at Iowa. A driver may post a strong ten-lap average while using too much tire. Another car may look mediocre early and become the best machine after Lap 20.
The No. 45 team must study the shape of each run.
Where does the falloff begin? Which tire changes Reddick’s balance first? Does the car lose time on entry, through the center, or at throttle pickup?
Those answers matter more than one fast lap.
Scott also has to balance fresh-tire speed against track position. The 2025 race produced 12 cautions, but it ended with a 64-lap green-flag run. A strategy built only around frequent yellows would have failed when the race finally settled.
A short pit can unlock speed, but it can also trap Reddick a lap down if the caution arrives during the green-flag cycle.
Clear communication will decide those calls. Reddick cannot simply report that the car feels tight or loose. He needs to explain when the problem begins, which lane magnifies it, and whether traffic caused the change.
Scott can then adjust pressure, balance, or strategy without chasing a temporary problem.
The Iowa Corn 350 Demands a More Controlled Reddick

Five early-season victories established the No. 45 as a weekly threat. His Darlington comeback showed what happens when the car stays strong deep into a run. The May tire test gave 23XI more Iowa information than most teams carried into the summer.
None of that guarantees a breakthrough.
His finishes of 22nd and 19th remain the strongest evidence available at this track. Iowa has not yet rewarded his aggression, adaptability, or talent.
That can change if Reddick treats restraint as a weapon.
During the opening laps, he must avoid chasing every car that jumps ahead. Through the middle of the run, he needs to keep the steering wheel calm and protect his throttle pickup. Once traffic appears, he must build passes instead of forcing them.
Then the race can move toward him.
Drivers who overuse the right-front will begin missing the center. Cars that spin the rear tires will lose drive off Turn 2. Braking points will retreat, and the field will spread.
That is when Tyler Reddick’s long-run speed at Iowa Speedway can become decisive.
The winning version of Reddick will still attack, but he will choose the moment. Iowa does not require him to abandon the style that made him special. It asks him to control that style long enough for it to matter.
