Months later, Christopher Bell crew chief Adam Stevens offered an even clearer warning before Nashville, calling the horsepower and aerodynamic combination a “complete gamechanger” and expecting greater tire degradation with larger lap-time losses over a run.
Gateway should magnify that challenge. The extra 80 horsepower does not suddenly turn the Next Gen car into an uncontrollable monster, but it gives drivers another way to hurt themselves. Push the throttle too hard with a tired right rear, and the car rotates farther than intended. Catch it once, and little happens. Do it lap after lap, and the tires remember.
That is where tire falloff stops being an engineering term. A driver feels it in his hands.
Denny Hamlin Already Showed the Gateway Formula

After the green returned, he passed Brad Keselowski shortly after Lap 216 and never surrendered the lead. Briscoe still recovered to second despite a left-rear issue during his stop. That sequence matters for 2026 because Gateway does not reward tire management in isolation. The winning driver still needs track position, his crew still needs clean stops, and the crew chief still has to read caution timing.
Fresh rubber without clear pavement can become wasted ammunition. Old rubber in clean air can become a target. With greater tire falloff, the difference between those choices widens.
Kyle Larson’s 2025 Mistake Shows the Other Edge

Blaney spun, and Larson immediately owned the mistake. He explained afterward that he had successfully made a similar move one lap earlier but misjudged where he would arrive alongside Blaney the second time.
That was not simply a story about tire wear. It was a picture of Gateway’s margin for error. A driver believes the grip will still be there, sends the car a few feet deeper, and suddenly the front tires refuse the request. The car travels another half-lane, and two playoff contenders are discussing it on pit road.
More horsepower adds another variable to that equation. This time, the mistake may begin on corner exit rather than entry. A driver who spins the rears leaving Turn 2 can carry damaged balance through the rest of the lap, and those tiny losses can decide whether the car attacks or defends during the closing run.
For drivers such as Larson and Hamlin, that creates an unusual challenge. Both can manufacture speed when grip disappears. Yet the Enjoy Illinois 300 may reward the driver who knows when not to use everything he has.
Tire Falloff Changes the Pit-Road Math
Crew chiefs will spend Sunday doing arithmetic while their drivers describe feelings: “Getting tight.” “Rear is gone.” “Can’t put power down.” Those radio messages can change an entire race.
With meaningful tire falloff, an early green-flag stop offers the chance to attack on fresh rubber while competitors struggle on worn sets. The gain can arrive quickly, but Gateway punishes anyone who gives away track position without a clear path back through traffic.
That creates a brutal question atop every pit box: How many tenths per lap are fresh tires really worth? Not theoretically. Right now.
Track temperature matters. So does traffic. A driver running alone may preserve the tires better than someone constantly changing lanes behind another car. The balance also changes throughout a fuel run. A car that starts slightly loose can become comfortable as fuel burns away, while another may begin neutral and turn hopelessly tight after the right front takes abuse.
No simulation perfectly captures all of it. Then the crew has to execute.
Alex Bowman supplied a painful example last year. A dropped jack during his Gateway stop sent him tumbling from seventh to 30th, and another penalty added to the damage. His afternoon ended with a 26th-place finish and a much uglier playoff position. Tires only provide an advantage when the crew gets them on cleanly.

The playoff stakes cannot sit in the background this year. Gateway hosts race two of NASCAR’s 10-race Chase, one week after the postseason begins. Drivers who leave the opener comfortably positioned can protect that margin. Anyone arriving after trouble will feel pressure from the first restart.
That changes racing behavior. A driver sitting safely above the championship cut can afford to lose one spot while protecting his right rear. Someone chasing points may have no such luxury. Tire conservation becomes less a mechanical decision than an emotional one.
The spotter says there is a lane. The driver knows the tires are fading. The points say go.
