Oscar Piastri’s high-speed balance will face its harshest test when the McLaren reaches Monza’s first braking zone. At roughly 350 km/h, the trees become a green smear, and the Rettifilo boards flash past too quickly for hesitation. Piastri must shed almost 280 km/h, climb the kerbs, rotate the car and launch toward Curva Grande without letting the rear axle break loose.
Monza compresses that negotiation into a few violent seconds.
The timing could hardly feel sharper. Piastri began Formula 1’s summer break angry, empty-handed and searching for answers after leading in Hungary. “Pretty much everything that could have gone wrong did,” he said after contact with Carlos Sainz and an apparent gearbox failure ended his afternoon.
His next instruction to himself sounded simpler than the problem: reset, find pace and come back stronger.
Active aero changes Monza’s old equation
Hungary rewarded Monaco-style downforce and rhythm through linked corners. The Italian Grand Prix demands the opposite philosophy, stripping the car toward minimum drag while preserving enough grip for the Lesmos, Ascari and Curva Alboreto.
Top speed drags Piastri to the braking zone. Balance decides whether he can attack it.
Formula 1’s active aerodynamics give the MCL40 two distinct shapes. Corner Mode closes the movable front and rear wing elements to create downforce. Straight Mode opens them, reducing drag as the car accelerates. Every driver can use the system in designated zones, so McLaren cannot rely on an exclusive straight-line device to disguise a weak corner exit.
On paper, the technology looks tailor-made for Monza. Open the wings down the straights, close them before the corners and enjoy both efficiency and grip.
Reality remains messier.
The floor, suspension, tyres and mechanical platform still have to carry the car through each transition. That task becomes harder when Piastri hits the brakes with the aerodynamic load shifting around him.
Front and rear wing movement must remain harmonised. Formula 1’s technical guidance says the front elements move with the rear to preserve stability, which reveals the central risk. Any weakness in how the MCL40 loads its axles can move the balance just as Piastri prepares to brake or commit to a fast direction change.
The 350 kW MGU-K adds another layer. Its electrical output reaches the rear wheels with almost three times the power available under the previous regulations, making clean traction vital. A snap of wheelspin not only hurts the exit. It interrupts acceleration and compromises how efficiently McLaren can deploy energy along the next straight.
After the second Lesmo, that mistake follows Piastri toward Ascari and then onto the run to Curva Alboreto.
McLaren has not published a fixed lap-time cost for a single slide, and assigning one would create false precision. The wider point remains clear: with teams budgeting energy across every part of the lap, small traction losses can shape the next attack or defence.
Lando Norris described the same conflict earlier in the season. Going flat through one corner may improve that sector, he explained, but it can leave the battery depleted on the next straight.
Piastri must solve a related equation at Monza. He needs to carry enough speed to protect lap time without forcing the rear tyres and electrical system to pay for it later.
Surviving Monza’s braking zones
The circuit measures 5.793 kilometres, runs for 53 laps and keeps the throttle open for about 80 per cent of each tour. Its 1.1-kilometre main straight rewards low drag, yet the stopwatch never isolates the straights from the corners feeding them.
A poor exit from the second Lesmo follows the driver all the way toward Ascari. Hesitation through Ascari then weakens the approach to the final corner.
That chain explains why a Monza setup cannot simply chase the highest speed-trap number. Reducing rear-wing load cuts drag, but it also removes the aerodynamic support that calms the car during braking and rapid direction changes. Monza often requires a dedicated wing package rather than a routine trim adjustment.
Rettifilo exposes the compromise first.
Piastri cannot nurse the entry because a timid brake release kills rotation and delays the throttle. Nor can he throw the MCL40 at the kerbs without restraint. The chassis must remain stable while the load leaves the front tyres, the rear becomes lighter, and the suspension absorbs the first change of direction.
Mechanical grip matters more here than Monza’s reputation suggests. Skinny wings reduce the aerodynamic cushion at low speed, so the car needs predictable brake migration and a rear axle that resists sudden rotation.
Piastri’s steering should look almost uneventful. Extra corrections mean extra scrub, heat and time.
Ascari asks a different question. The driver arrives fast, attacks the first left and changes direction twice while balancing kerb use against platform control. A nervous rear end forces a lift. An unwilling front axle pushes the car wide and delays the final application of power.
Piastri’s best laps often carry a particular stillness. His hands remain measured, the car rotates once, and the exit unfolds without drama.
That signature calm shatters when he must wait for the rear to settle. Monza magnifies the delay because nearly every important corner opens onto a meaningful acceleration zone.
His record at the circuit proves he can operate near the front. Piastri finished second in 2024 and third in 2025. Charles Leclerc beat him through tyre strategy in the first race. One year later, Max Verstappen controlled the Grand Prix with a Red Bull that held a clear pace advantage over both McLarens.
McLaren’s official 2025 qualifying report also carried a warning. Andrea Stella called the session “not the most comfortable” and said Monza would challenge the car. After the race, the team acknowledged that the circuit did not necessarily suit its package, even though Norris and Piastri still finished second and third.
The MCL40 arrives with a different architecture, but Piastri’s description of the new generation sounds especially relevant. Without the old ground-effect load, he said, the cars feel looser and slide more readily. Those movements also affect the tyres, forcing him to reshape instincts built through the previous regulations.
Tyre degradation may remain modest over a Monza stint, but tyre condition still matters. Repeated sliding can raise surface temperature and weaken traction long before the compound suffers conventional wear.
McLaren learned that lesson in 2025. The team could not rely on a large degradation advantage to create strategic freedom. Its post-race debrief concluded that it simply lacked the pace to challenge Verstappen.
A stable car gives Piastri more than a clean qualifying lap. It lets him follow closely without abusing the front tyres, protect the rears through repeated exits and preserve electrical energy for combat.
Those gains rarely appear in one spectacular telemetry trace. They accumulate over 53 laps.
Hungary left a bruise and a blueprint
Piastri’s Hungarian Grand Prix should have carried him into the break with momentum. He jumped Leclerc at the start, cut back underneath Norris at Turn 2 and led the opening half of the race.
Traffic changed the shape of his afternoon after the second stop. Contact with Sainz cost more time before the gearbox ended his day.
The frustration deserved space. Piastri had placed himself in position to win, then watched the opportunity dissolve through traffic, contact and reliability. His radio anger did not come from nowhere.
Stella later said Piastri apologised for the outburst and described the fight between the McLarens as fair, respectful racing.
Sainz’s place in the incident also needs perspective. The Williams driver entered the break 15th in the standings with six points. He was battling Fernando Alonso near the back when Piastri arrived to lap him. Williams later accepted that it should have warned Sainz more clearly about the approaching McLaren.
McLaren still found something valuable in Budapest. Norris won with what he called one of his strongest race-pace performances, while Stella credited the team’s upgrade package for a clear step forward.
Piastri led in the same car before the race escaped him. Hungary proved the MCL40 could win, even if the Australian left without a trophy.
The championship damage remains severe. Kimi Antonelli leads with 219 points after six victories, a run that has turned the Mercedes driver into the season’s central force. Piastri sits seventh on 92 points, 127 behind Antonelli and 36 behind Norris.
Those numbers make a title comeback improbable, but they also change what the next two races mean. Piastri no longer has the luxury of waiting for McLaren’s progress to become consistent. He needs evidence now.
Zandvoort will provide the first test after the summer break, asking whether the gains seen in Hungary can survive faster corners, changing winds and a narrower operating window. One week later, Monza will push that examination to its extreme.
Monza can restart Piastri’s season
By the time McLaren reaches Italy, it will have fresh data from Zandvoort and a clearer picture of how the MCL40 behaves beyond Hungary’s slow, loaded corners.
Monza will then strip away any remaining shelter.
Watch Piastri at the first chicane. A clean release from the brake will show that he trusts the rear. Study the second Lesmo, where early throttle can build speed for the entire run to Ascari.
Then look at his hands through Ascari itself. One decisive steering sequence will reveal more about the setup than a headline speed-trap figure.
