Max Verstappen knew his qualifying lap was in trouble before the stopwatch confirmed it. As his Red Bull hammered across Monza’s opening chicane, the rear refused to absorb the kerbs. The car struck one ridge, bounced toward the next, and pushed wide as Verstappen waited for the front tires to bite. That ugly stiffness felt painfully familiar.
“The car is broken on the rear axle again,” Verstappen warned over the radio during Q2. He described the RB22 as “really undriveable” through Turns 2, 4, and 5, three corners where confidence over the kerbs determines speed along the following straights.
Still, he forced the car into Q3 and produced a 1:22.070, good enough for sixth. Pierre Gasly’s shock pole lap was 0.284 seconds faster, although Verstappen believed the unidentified rear failure cost him at least two tenths.
Remove that loss, and he moves from the third row toward the front-row fight. Instead, a car that had felt competitive during final practice became unpredictable just as qualifying began. Red Bull’s problem was no longer finding another setup adjustment. Something in the rear suspension had stopped working.
Red Bull found a balance before the car betrayed it
Friday had already left Verstappen short on confidence. He sat out FP1 while Ayumu Iwasa completed a mandatory rookie session, costing the Dutchman crucial setup time at Formula 1’s fastest circuit.
Once Verstappen returned for FP2, the complaints arrived quickly. The RB22 lacked rear grip, bounced heavily, and behaved inconsistently under braking. Low-speed balance felt manageable, but the car felt disconnected as speed increased.

What Red Bull has acknowledged reveals the damage. The failure altered the RB22’s ride control, so the rear could no longer compress over a kerb and recover cleanly. Instead, it stayed rigid and kicked the car into another bounce.
Monza turned one faulty component into a lap-time leak
Low-downforce Formula 1 cars already move violently at Monza. Their trimmed wings reduce drag along the straights, but they also leave drivers with less aerodynamic grip when the car changes direction. The suspension must absorb the remaining punishment.
Verstappen attacked the first chicane under brutal braking, dropping from more than 200 mph before throwing the RB22 across the right-left sequence. With the rear unable to recover properly, the car skipped over the kerbs and resisted rotation. He then had to delay the throttle while the chassis settled.

The same failure hurt him through the Variante della Roggia. Turns 4 and 5 demand another aggressive change of direction over high kerbs. Verstappen could strike them with his usual commitment and risk launching the car off line, or protect the rear and surrender distance.
Neither choice produced a pole lap. When he pushed harder, the balance collapsed into mid-corner understeer. The front tires washed across the asphalt because the unstable rear platform prevented the car from rotating cleanly. Inside the cockpit, his hands became busier as he corrected movements that had not existed during FP3.
The RB22 still carried speed, but its malfunctioning rear prevented Verstappen from using it. He estimated the fault alone lasted at least 0.2 seconds. Russell claimed second with a lap only 0.224 seconds quicker, showing how close Red Bull had come to the front row despite the failure.

That admission cut deeper than his radio anger. Formula 1 introduced completely new technical regulations for 2026, and the RB22 bears little resemblance to its predecessor. Yet the same mechanical vulnerability appears to have survived the redesign.
“I know where it is myself,” Verstappen said, while acknowledging that identifying the sensation does not make him the engineer who can cure it. Red Bull listens to his feedback. His frustration comes from its inability to convert that feedback into a lasting fix.
Engineers must first establish why the component binds under load. Then comes the harder task: redesigning it without creating another weakness elsewhere. One faulty piece can disrupt ride height and suspension movement. Once the platform starts bouncing, the aerodynamics become inconsistent, and the tires slide across the track instead of biting into it.
Monza exposed that entire chain reaction in less than 90 minutes.
The failure has changed how Verstappen attacks
Verstappen separated the suspension problem from Red Bull’s earlier rear-wing failures. If a rear wing suddenly sheds aerodynamic load through Ascari or Parabolica, the driver can spin toward the gravel at close to 180 mph. The Monza suspension fault did not create the same immediate danger, but it still forced him to calculate risk differently.
Verstappen admitted he has backed away from the absolute limit at certain moments this season. When an unpredictable car offers only seventh place, another violent kerb strike or snap of oversteer may not justify the gamble.
Such restraint marks a striking change for a driver whose reputation rests on finding speed where others see none. Even Verstappen, however, cannot force a jammed suspension to absorb an impact. He can adjust his line, soften his inputs, and avoid the largest kerbs, but each compromise hands another fraction to Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren.
The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix had already shown how dramatically the RB22’s balance could trap him. Verstappen called the car undriveable after qualifying eighth, more than a second away from pole. Monza brought a different failure but repeated the same exhausting pattern: his weekend became an exercise in damage limitation rather than a pursuit of victory.
Red Bull now faces two connected challenges. It must make the car faster while ensuring that performance survives an entire race weekend.
Monza’s heat will punish every unwanted slide
The mechanical fault did most of the damage, but Red Bull’s qualifying plan also unraveled around Verstappen. Liam Lawson needed to reach Q3 and provide a slipstream along Monza’s long straights. Instead, Oscar Piastri impeded him during Q2 near the first chicane, and Lawson dropped out before the decisive runs.
Stewards later handed Piastri a three-place grid penalty, promoting Verstappen from sixth to fifth. The extra position improved his launch point for Sunday, but it mattered only if Red Bull could make the car beneath him predictable again. Mechanics may replace a damaged part with an equivalent component if the FIA accepts that the original has failed. They cannot use the repair as cover for a broader setup change.
If Red Bull restores the rear to its FP3 condition, Verstappen believes he can chase the leading group. Starting fifth places him close enough to pressure Charles Leclerc and Hamilton before strategy begins reshaping the race.
A failed repair would leave him facing 53 punishing laps in severe heat. Race-day air temperatures could reach 34 degrees Celsius, with the black asphalt baking far beyond that beneath the afternoon sun. Heat will shimmer above the main straight, while cockpit temperatures force drivers to manage their bodies as carefully as their tires.
Monza usually produces modest tire wear, but Verstappen’s problem adds another threat. Every slide across the scorching surface generates extra heat. A heavy fuel load will drive the RB22 harder into the kerbs during the opening stint. Following another car will also reduce aerodynamic grip, making the understeer worse while trapping more heat around the tires and brakes.
Gasly’s unexpected pole has scrambled the front of the grid. Russell starts alongside him, while Ferrari and Verstappen wait immediately behind. That unusual order gives Red Bull an opportunity, but only if the car beneath its champion can withstand the kerbs, the heat and its own mechanical weakness.
