Max Verstappen arrived at the final corner of his last qualifying lap with the RB22 already slipping away from him. Seconds later, the rear snapped.
The Red Bull rotated across the runoff area as yellow flags closed the session. Verstappen’s chance to improve disappeared with it. His earlier lap left him in P6, 0.518 seconds behind Lando Norris and the pole time of 1:17.207.
Under the fierce Budapest sun, the track surface was pushing towards 50°C. Heat sat over the asphalt while drivers fought for grip around one of Formula 1’s tightest circuits. Inside the Red Bull garage, the tension had been building for more than 24 hours.
Verstappen’s spin was not a sudden mistake at the end of an otherwise clean weekend. It was the final stage of a problem that began during Friday practice and became more severe each time the car returned to the circuit.
Grid penalties for Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli eventually promoted Verstappen to P4. The improved starting position offered Red Bull a lifeline, but it could not hide what happened inside the car.
Friday’s Warning Signs Followed Red Bull Into Qualifying
Red Bull knew something was wrong long before Verstappen reached Q3.
During Friday practice, the RB22 looked uncomfortable through the Hungaroring’s repeated direction changes. Verstappen reported weak rear grip and a stiff feeling from the back of the car. Gusting wind made the balance even harder to understand.
His lap time deficits told the same story. The fastest Red Bull finished 0.484 seconds away from the pace in FP1, then slipped to 0.692 seconds behind in FP2. By FP3 on Saturday, that gap had widened again to 0.717 seconds.
Technical director Pierre Waché admitted that neither driver was happy with the balance. Red Bull needed a stiff platform to keep the aerodynamics stable, but that approach made the RB22 more nervous over bumps and kerbs.
The challenge was not simply finding more grip. Any adjustment risked shifting the weakness elsewhere. More support at the rear could damage the front response. Softening the car could improve its behaviour over the surface, but weaken the aerodynamic platform underneath it.
Those compromises followed Red Bull into qualifying.
Verstappen briefly went fastest during Q1, yet Norris soon moved 0.379 seconds clear. The deficit grew to 0.416 seconds in Q2. Rather than closing the gap as the track developed, Red Bull was losing ground.
That pattern set the stage for Q3.
The RB22 Deteriorated as Verstappen Pushed Harder
Hungary usually makes tyre management the central challenge. Pirelli brought the C3, C4 and C5 compounds, the softest selection in its range. On a scorching track, every slide raised tyre temperatures and reduced grip.
Verstappen believed his problem went deeper.
Fresh tyres should have made the RB22 quicker as qualifying progressed. Lower fuel and improving track conditions should also have helped. Instead, the car developed more oversteer with every run.
Red Bull’s data showed a loss of aerodynamic load. Verstappen felt the rear becoming increasingly detached when he entered corners. The harder he pushed, the less confidence the car gave him.
“The car just kept getting worse and worse, lap after lap,” Max Verstappen said.
His first Q3 effort produced a 1:17.725. That left him more than 0.5 seconds away from Norris before the final runs began.
Managing fading rubber is routine for a driver of Verstappen’s experience. An unstable aerodynamic balance gives him far fewer options. He cannot commit to a braking point when the car may respond differently from one lap to the next.
At the final corner, that uncertainty became visible.
Verstappen turned in, and the rear continued rotating. The car no longer had the support he expected. Once the slide began, there was little he could do except control the spin and keep the RB22 away from the barriers.
His angry radio message was not only frustration over a lost lap. It reflected an entire weekend spent chasing a balance that kept moving further away.
Hadjar’s Spin Removed Any Doubt
Isack Hadjar, promoted to partner Verstappen for the 2026 season, also lost control during qualifying.
His spin came in Q2, although he recovered and reached the final session before taking P8. Hadjar finished 0.649 seconds behind pole and only 0.131 seconds slower than Verstappen.
He did not describe the same severe aerodynamic deterioration, but his own struggle strengthened Red Bull’s diagnosis. Both drivers lacked confidence near the limit, and neither side of the garage found a setup that remained stable as the pace increased.
That removed the easiest explanation.
Red Bull could not dismiss Verstappen’s spin as a single driver error or an aggressive setup choice. Hadjar’s difficulties showed that the RB22’s balance problem was affecting the whole team.
A damaged component can be replaced. One poor adjustment can be reversed. Red Bull instead appears to be chasing a car whose behaviour changes with temperature, wind, track surface and setup.
Verstappen has felt similar symptoms earlier in the season, although the cause has not always been the same. That is what makes the problem so dangerous. The team is not correcting one repeatable weakness. It is trying to control a moving target.
P4 Cannot Hide What Red Bull Risks on Race Day
Hamilton’s penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri and Antonelli’s sanction for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags moved Verstappen onto the second row.
At the Hungaroring, that promotion is significant. Passing opportunities are limited, while the tight sequence of corners makes following another car difficult. Starting P4 keeps Verstappen close enough to challenge Norris, Charles Leclerc and Piastri.
The position may protect his race. The car could still undermine it.
Higher temperatures will punish any machine that slides through the circuit’s long sequence of corners. Should the RB22 continue moving underneath Verstappen, the rear tyres will suffer. Aerodynamic instability could quickly become a tyre degradation problem, forcing Red Bull to pit early or surrender pace.
There is also little room to manage the weakness around this track. Verstappen cannot back away through every corner without losing touch with the leaders. To fight for the podium, he must attack the same entries that exposed the car during qualifying.
Red Bull’s recent success has depended on giving Verstappen a strong front end and a rear platform he can trust. That combination allows him to brake late, rotate sharply and return to the throttle before his rivals.
In Hungary, each qualifying lap removed a little more of that trust.
The inherited P4 starting place gives Verstappen a chance to rescue the weekend. It does not restore his confidence in the car.
For a driver built around control, aggression and the belief that every race can be won, an unpredictable RB22 changes more than the setup sheet. It forces Verstappen to think about survival instead of attack.
That is the real threat to his championship mentality. Red Bull is not only taking speed away from its driver. It is making him question what the car will do next.
