At Monza, that moment can decide the race. A Safety Car would compress the field, cut the cost of a tyre change and create a restart shaped by Formula 1’s new electrical rules. Yet the opportunity would last only seconds. Ferrari must know whether to pit, which compound to fit and how to position Hamilton before the yellow lights appear.
They cannot improvise this one.
Ferrari Needs Chaos Without Creating More of It
Formula 1’s pre-race data for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix placed the historical Safety Car probability at 50% and the Virtual Safety Car probability at 38%, based on the previous eight Monza races. The same event notes estimated a normal green-flag pit-stop loss at roughly 24.3 seconds.
Those numbers do not guarantee disruption in 2026, but they explain why Ferrari must treat a neutralisation as a realistic strategic branch rather than a fortunate accident. Monza lasts only 53 laps, giving drivers fewer chances to recover from a poor call than they would at a longer, more technical circuit. Lose five seconds through hesitation, and the race may move beyond reach. Save more than ten seconds by stopping under caution and a marginal podium challenge can suddenly become a fight for victory.

The New Energy Rules Make Restarts More Dangerous

The current power units can send as much as 350kW of electrical power through the MGU-K. Overtake Mode also allows an eligible following driver to recharge an additional 0.5MJ and use a stronger electrical profile on the next lap. A rival may catch the slipstream and arrive at Rettifilo with greater electrical deployment.
The challenge changes if Hamilton restarts second. Ferrari would want him close enough to qualify for Overtake Mode without overheating the tyres while following. Dirty air through the two Lesmo corners reduces front grip, forcing more steering input and increasing the load on the front tyres. A poor exit from Lesmo 2 can ruin the entire attack before the braking zone at Ascari.

Hamilton and his engineer must balance tyre preparation, brake temperature and energy storage throughout the neutralised laps. Restarts are no longer just about bravery on the brakes. Formula 1’s analysis of the 2025 race found that a driver needed to sit within roughly 1.5 seconds of the car ahead to create a realistic undercut threat. Ferrari could face the same decision with Hamilton. Pitting early to cover Antonelli or George Russell would protect him against an undercut, but it would also remove him from the most valuable Safety Car window. Once Hamilton has stopped, a caution could allow the Mercedes drivers to change tyres at a reduced cost and emerge ahead.
Staying out keeps that option alive, although it also leaves him exposed to tyre wear, traffic and a sudden drop in lap time. The pit wall therefore needs a clear crossover point. Ferrari should calculate the final lap on which waiting for a caution remains more valuable than protecting the existing position, while accounting for Hamilton’s tyre condition, the gaps behind him and the compounds available to every rival.
An offset only works when the driver can still use it. If Hamilton extends on degrading mediums, he cannot afford to lose several seconds while hoping for yellow flags. Ferrari must keep him close enough to the leaders that a reduced pit loss actually changes his race.
Heavy traffic would defeat the purpose. Following another car through the Lesmos would raise front-tyre temperatures and reduce the energy Hamilton can recover and deploy efficiently.
Ferrari Must Prepare for Three Caution Windows
An early intervention may tempt Ferrari into an immediate stop, but the replacement tyres could struggle to reach the finish. Pitting during the opening laps only makes sense if Hamilton has front-wing damage, severe graining or a realistic chance to gain several positions. A late caution leaves fewer racing laps and places a much higher premium on track position. Fresh soft tyres may offer a clear pace advantage, but passing several cars requires more than grip at Monza. Every rival will prepare the same electrical deployment for the straights, while the shortened restart period may give Hamilton only two or three proper attempts.
Ferrari must weigh the tyre delta against the number of cars Hamilton would need to clear. Dropping from second to sixth could make sense with ten racing laps remaining and badly worn hard tyres. It becomes far harder to justify when race control may allow only a two-lap sprint.
Engineers should also account for the cars between Hamilton and the leader. A slower driver with strong straight-line speed could consume the entire remaining race, even if Hamilton carries fresher rubber.
The Double Stack Needs a Rule Before Race Day
Charles Leclerc complicates every Ferrari Safety Car decision. If both cars run close together, they may arrive at the pit entry only seconds apart. Stopping them on the same lap can protect both strategies, but the second driver risks waiting behind his team-mate while the mechanics complete the first service.
That delay can erase the benefit of stopping under caution. Ferrari must therefore establish priority rules before Sunday. The lead car should normally receive the first stop unless the trailing driver holds a major tyre advantage or faces a more urgent championship need. Any exception must come from pre-race planning rather than a debate over team radio.
Spacing also matters. The trailing Ferrari may need to leave enough room for the first stop without slowing so sharply that it breaches Safety Car timing requirements or allows rivals to interfere. That calculation belongs with the strategy team before the cars reach the pit entry, not after both drivers have already committed.
