George Russell is bleeding time on the straights at the exact circuit where straight-line speed matters most. His final qualifying lap at Spa-Francorchamps felt strong through the corners, but the stopwatch delivered a harsher verdict. Mercedes Finds A Clue But Still Lacks An Answer
Russell felt he extracted almost everything from his final qualifying lap. The cornering data largely supported that assessment. His biggest losses arrived when the steering wheel was straight and the throttle was fully open, leaving him with little opportunity to recover the time himself.
The British driver estimated that he surrendered about 0.8 seconds on the straights during Friday running. That figure fell closer to 0.4 seconds on Saturday after Mercedes adjusted the car and cooler qualifying conditions moved the W17 into a more effective operating window.
Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin identified poor energy deployment before the final chicane as one clear source of the missing pace.
Engineers must now determine whether Russell’s electrical assistance is reducing too early before the braking zone. One possibility involves the energy delivered by the MGU-K, the electric motor connected to the rear axle. Should that assistance fade before the end of a straight, the car continues accelerating with less power than its rivals.
Mercedes has not confirmed a specific component failure. Russell said the investigation also covered the battery, power unit, rear wing, floor, bearings and possible mechanical resistance within the car.
His attempt to lower his head inside the cockpit showed how few options remained available. Kart racers sometimes use the technique to reduce their exposed frontal area. A Formula 1 car, though, generates most of its drag through the wings, floor, tyres and wider aerodynamic package.
Moving his helmet by a few centimetres was never likely to recover several tenths. Russell tried it because Mercedes had already exhausted the most obvious explanations.
“Battling against Kimi at the best of times is very tough in a fair fight. When we’re in this situation, it’s impossible,” George Russell said.
Antonelli Finds Speed As Russell Searches For Answers
While Russell’s engineers traced the missing energy, Antonelli grew faster with every qualifying run.
Changing wind and limited rear grip disrupted the Italian during Q1, allowing Russell to briefly hold the stronger position inside the Mercedes garage. Antonelli responded decisively once the circuit conditions improved. He led Q2, gained confidence on each fresh set of soft tyres and carried that momentum into the final session.

Russell’s top speed disadvantage does not explain the entire 0.508-second difference between the Mercedes cars. Toto Wolff acknowledged that Russell also surrendered roughly 0.2 to 0.25 seconds through several corners. The team principal said his driver had struggled to feel fully connected with the W17 across the previous 2 weekends.
Wolff still refused to place all the blame on Russell. Mercedes can see a genuine straight-line weakness in the data, while Shovlin confirmed that the poor deployment before the final chicane cost him a position in the original qualifying order.
The contrast became impossible to ignore. Antonelli adapted as the session developed and delivered when the circuit was fastest. Russell completed a respectable lap, but his car stopped giving him the same tools once it reached full throttle.
The Championship Gap Raises The Stakes
Antonelli enters the Belgian Grand Prix with a 25-point championship lead. His advantage has survived recent reliability trouble because he has repeatedly converted the W17’s pace when the machinery has remained healthy.
The season has not produced a clean comparison at every race. Russell retired while leading in Canada. Antonelli then lost valuable opportunities through mechanical problems in Barcelona and Silverstone.
Their points gap has been shaped by outright pace, execution and which driver escaped the more damaging failures. Spa presents a different concern for Russell. Both Mercedes cars reached Q3, both drivers completed their final attempts, and Antonelli still finished more than half a second ahead.
Such a result does not settle the championship. It does increase the pressure on Russell’s side of the garage. Every unresolved tenth makes it harder for him to attack Antonelli before the standings begin stretching beyond a single race victory.

Kemmel Could Turn Russell From Hunter To Target
Russell’s first opportunity comes under braking for La Source at Turn 1. A sharp launch could fire him alongside Verstappen or place him directly behind Antonelli through the opening corner.
The greater danger arrives seconds later. The field plunges downhill, storms through Eau Rouge and Raidillon, then races along the Kemmel Straight before braking for Les Combes at Turn 5.
A strong tow could slingshot Russell towards the cars ahead. The same slipstream could launch a rival past him if the W17 runs out of electrical assistance before the braking zone.
Spa punishes weakness at full throttle. Drivers can close rapidly on Kemmel, pull from the draft and strike before the defending car has time to respond. Russell may have enough cornering speed to stay with the leaders through the middle sector, but every long straight threatens to erase that work.
Starting 3rd keeps him within striking distance of victory. It also leaves him dangerously exposed.
