Still, Baku gives him something Madrid cannot: evidence.
Teams understand how the draft behaves there. They know where overtakes happen and how quickly a leading car can recover from a poor starting position. Mercedes can model the race with far greater confidence than it can at a new venue.

Mercedes, therefore, cannot choose Sepang solely because it offers passing opportunities. Brixworth must believe the current hardware can reach it.
That judgment will change after every session.
What Brixworth Engineers Are Really Looking For
Once Russell’s car returns to the garage, Mercedes engineers begin searching for the small warnings that precede a major failure.
They inspect oil samples for metallic debris. Technicians study filters, check wiring, and examine housings for microscopic cracks or heat discoloration. Battery data receives particular attention after the abrupt Canadian shutdown.
None of those checks can deliver complete certainty.
Shovlin has acknowledged that failure probability evolves after every event. Fresh inspection data may convince Mercedes that a component can reach a sixth or seventh race. One worrying trace can pull the planned change forward immediately.
