The gap was 5.641 seconds. In Formula 1, that is not a normal qualifying deficit. Fernando Alonso completed Q1 in 1:50.002, while Kimi Antonelli later took pole in 1:44.361. Lance Stroll was slower again at 1:50.177. All three drivers used soft-compound slick tyres, so rain did not create the gulf.
Alonso qualified 21st and Stroll 22nd because Cadillac’s arrival expanded the 2026 field to 11 teams and 22 cars. Power-unit penalties later moved Stroll to 20th on the provisional grid, while Alonso remained 22nd. Aston Martin is not starting at the back of the familiar 20-car field. It is occupying the final places on Formula 1’s newly expanded grid.
The 2026 calendar sends the paddock from Belgium to Hungary one week later. Aston Martin is treating that short gap as a dividing line. Spa is about surviving 44 laps with the current AMR26. Budapest is where its heavily revised car must finally show whether the team has understood its problems.
Spa Exposes Every Weakness In The AMR26
Spa Francorchamps asks a car to perform several conflicting jobs within one lap. It needs strong traction out of La Source, stability through the compression at Eau Rouge and enough efficiency to climb Raidillon without losing momentum.
The Kemmel Straight then punishes drag and weak electrical deployment. Pouhon exposes any shortage of downforce or confidence in fast corners. Blanchimont requires commitment from a car that must remain steady as the speed rises.
Aston Martin has struggled in each area.
The Honda power unit remains short of performance, particularly on circuits with long periods of acceleration and limited chances to recover electrical energy. The chassis adds another problem. Stroll has described a lack of downforce, persistent balance limitations and aerodynamic stalls that engineers cannot always identify through pressure sensors alone.
Those weaknesses leave Alonso and Stroll fighting the car before they can fight another driver. A clean run through Eau Rouge means little when the battery deployment fades on Kemmel. No amount of experience can create speed that the machinery does not possess.
Friday practice had already shown the scale of the crisis. Stroll finished more than five seconds behind Antonelli, with Alonso another 0.3 seconds back. Qualifying confirmed that setup changes and a well-timed slipstream could not close the gap.
Sunday Becomes A 44-Lap Test Session.
The mood inside Aston Martin was not one of false optimism.
Stroll acknowledged that the team had little chance of racing its way into contention, admitting, “We know there’s not much to fight for here. It’s about getting through this weekend and focusing on what’s coming in Budapest.”
His assessment captured the reality of Aston Martin’s Belgian weekend. The race plan is now painfully narrow. Keep both cars out of trouble. Study tyre behaviour. Test cooling and energy management over a full race distance. Make the pit calls cleanly. Collect anything that can help engineers understand where the current package is failing.
Alonso and Stroll will probably need retirements ahead merely to move up the order. Mike Krack has acknowledged that the team must be realistic, with any gains likely to come through attrition rather than raw pace. The AMR26 is simply not quick enough to race the midfield on equal terms.
The team also took new power-unit components for both cars. Alonso received a fresh energy store, control electronics and an ancillary component. Stroll had already triggered a penalty with his own changes. Since the cars qualified on the back row, the penalties carried almost no sporting cost. Aston Martin gained fresher hardware without surrendering a competitive starting position.
Hungary Must Provide Immediate Evidence
Aston Martin is not bringing a minor wing adjustment to Budapest. The AMR26 will retain its basic chassis and gearbox architecture, but the team has removed weight from both. That work required fresh homologation and another crash test for the forward chassis.
Further changes include a new nose, revised rear suspension and substantially reworked aerodynamic surfaces. Aston Martin wants more downforce, fewer sudden aerodynamic stalls and a balance that allows Alonso and Stroll to attack corners with confidence.
Hungary should provide a clear reading. The Hungaroring places greater emphasis on chassis grip, balance and sustained cornering than raw engine power. Honda is preparing another performance step for later in the season, but Stroll has warned that extra power will not rescue a car that still lacks downforce in Budapest.
A strong Friday would not erase Aston Martin’s disastrous opening half of 2026. Visible progress would at least confirm that its development direction is sound. Another large deficit would suggest that the problems run deeper than one upgrade can solve.
Spa has mercilessly exposed the AMR26. Hungary must show that Aston Martin knows how to fix it.
