Fernando Alonso finished FP1 in 13th place, 2.4 seconds from the front. Lance Stroll completed only 11 laps before a left rear suspension problem sent him spinning and ended his day. Aston Martin then spent Friday protecting a limited stock of new components while its mechanics tried to understand a failure nobody expected.
On the timing screens, it looked like more misery for a team that arrived in Hungary with only 1 point from the first 10 races. Inside the garage, the verdict was less brutal. Alonso began on hard tyres and spent much of the session collecting controlled aerodynamic data. Engineers even asked him to avoid the kerbs because the vibrations would corrupt their readings. His late soft tyre run provided a baseline, not a clean qualifying simulation.
The gap remained ugly. Yet the early data offered Aston Martin something it has rarely possessed this season: evidence that the car was behaving roughly as its simulations predicted.
The AMR26 Finally Looks Like A New Project
Instead of bringing small updates race by race, Aston Martin swallowed several painful months and built one large overhaul for Budapest.
The package changes almost every aerodynamic surface that matters. A revised nose and front wing aim to give Alonso and Stroll a stronger front end. New brake duct elements manage the disturbed air around the front wheels, while extensive floor changes attempt to generate more load underneath the car.
Further back, the sidepod inlet creates more space beneath the bodywork. The engine cover now channels airflow more cleanly toward the rear suspension and wing. Even the rear wing has been revised to produce more cornering load without carrying the same drag penalty on the straights.
Visually, the AMR26 now has a tighter waist and a more aggressive route for air beneath its flanks. It is not a copy of one rival concept. Newey has tried to make Aston Martin’s original idea function as intended.
The surgery stops short of the car’s core. Its chassis layout, gearbox architecture and front suspension remain fundamentally unchanged. Weight has been removed from the chassis and gearbox, while the rear suspension has received smaller revisions. That work required Aston Martin to complete fresh crash testing around the front of the car.
Newey therefore calls the package an aerodynamic evolution rather than a replacement. In practical terms, it is the first version of the AMR26 developed with enough time to question the rushed decisions that shaped the original.
Stroll’s Failure Turned Testing Into Damage Control
With so many new parts arriving together, engineers had planned comparison runs across different setups, tyres and fuel conditions.
Stroll’s suspension failure ripped through that programme after only 11 laps.
The Canadian lost control between Turns 2 and 3 when the left rear corner failed. Aston Martin had worked around that area before his run, although Newey said the upgrade had not changed the main component involved. That made the incident more concerning, not less.
Mechanics could not repair the car before FP2. Alonso continued alone, completing 24 laps and finishing 19th as the team gathered the data it could.
Losing Stroll did more than remove half the mileage. Aston Martin arrived with few spare examples of several revised components. New bodywork and cladding also meant that even an unchanged mechanical area could require a new specification replacement part.
The team could not afford another accident. Drivers normally attack kerbs, explore the limit and test aggressive setups during practice. Aston Martin instead had to balance learning against the risk of losing a component it could not quickly replace.
Newey did not disguise how low the bar had fallen. He said Aston Martin’s immediate goal was to score “at least a point” and recover some respectability. For a project built around a new factory, an exclusive Honda partnership, Alonso and the most successful designer of his generation, that was a striking admission.
Friday also exposed the limit of what a new floor and front wing can fix. Even when the aerodynamics began matching the simulation, the car still carried vibrations and integration problems from the machinery behind Alonso’s seat. Newey could reshape the airflow around the AMR26, but Aston Martin could not judge the full package while its power unit remained another moving target.
Fresh Aerodynamics Cannot Hide The Honda Problem
Honda’s new power unit has complicated almost every stage of Aston Martin’s season.
Severe vibration and integration problems restricted preseason running. Aston Martin reached the Australian opener without completing what Newey considered proper running until FP3. Those lost kilometres prevented the team from understanding its new car before racing began.
Some problems have eased, but Hungary showed that the power unit remains unfinished. Alonso’s onboard footage revealed visible oscillations during Friday running. Newey directed questions about them toward Honda and confirmed that its engineers could see the issue in the data.
That vibration affects more than driver comfort. It can disturb electronics, strain surrounding components and force compromises in how aggressively the car runs.
Honda must also improve how the power unit delivers electrical energy on the straights, but that remains a supporting issue compared to Aston Martin’s larger aerodynamic rebuild.
A new Honda specification is planned for the Dutch Grand Prix. Aston Martin will also bring further chassis changes at Zandvoort, followed by more development around Monza and Baku.
That schedule makes Hungary only the opening move. Engineers must establish whether the new floor delivers stable load, whether the lighter structure improves balance and whether Honda can provide power without creating another problem elsewhere.
Respectability Means Catching Audi And Williams
Aston Martin sits 10th in the Constructors’ Championship with 1 point. Audi has 10, Williams has 11, and Haas has 21. Cadillac remains behind without a point, but simply beating the newest team on the grid would hardly represent progress for Aston Martin.
The first real target is Audi and Williams. Both have already shown that they can reach the lower end of the points when opportunities appear. Haas represents the next marker, although its 20-point advantage shows how much ground Aston Martin has lost.
Newey is not pretending the Hungary package will suddenly challenge Mercedes, Ferrari or McLaren. He openly described Aston Martin as playing a major catch-up game and dismissed the idea that the revised car could immediately become the fastest. What he expects is a genuine step from the machine that spent much of the opening half of the season trapped near the back row.
There are no magic bullets in Formula 1. Budapest will not erase the rushed design process, the power unit failures or the outdated internal systems that undermined Aston Martin before the season had properly begun.
Alonso felt the car was closer to expectations. The track data began matching the factory’s predictions. Newey saw enough to call the initial results promising.
Aston Martin now needs that promise to survive qualifying pressure, race fuel, tyre degradation and 70 punishing laps on Sunday.
Nobody in the garage needs another encouraging simulation. They need a car capable of catching Audi and Williams, surviving an entire weekend and putting both drivers in the fight for points. Hungary was messy, slow and expensive in lost running. It may also have been the first day Aston Martin stopped moving backwards.
